Fungi are the most frequently observed pathogens of mite populations, helping to control them on different crops. Twenty-five samples of leaves were collected from rubber tree plantations adjacent to two fragments of Cerrado vegetation. Each rubber tree plantation had 25 plants selected for sampling and seven leaves from around each tree top were collected up to seven to eight meters above grou...

The complete mitochondrial genome of Purpureocillium lavendulum was characterized in this study. This mitogenome is a closed circular molecule 23,567 bp length with GC content 28.46%, including 15 protein-coding genes, 25 transfer RNA 2 ribosomal genes. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences at the 14 concatenated genes showed that P. closely related to Hirsutella minnesotensis.

Hirsutella rhossiliensis and H. minnesotensis are endoparasitic fungi of the second-stage juvenile (J2) of the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines) in nature. They also parasitize both H. glycines J2 and Caenorhabditis elegans on agar plates. Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation conditions were established for these Hirsutella spp. The resulting transformants were similar to...

The nematophagous fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis Minter and Brady parasitizes CriconemeUa xenoplax (Raski) Luc & Raski in many California stone fruit orchards (5). We assume that the nematode population density would be higher if the fungus were absent, but the suppressive effect of the fungus has not been quantified in the field. Biocides have been used to inhibit antagonists of pests and thu...

Hirsutella thompsonii # 966 was cultured and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was then eluted on Sephadex LH-20 column with methanol and the eluted chemical components were analyzed on a Bruker DRX 400 NMR spectrophotometer. The analysis showed several components such as glycerol, ergosterol and diketopiperazine. This was the first time that diketopiperazine had been isolat...

Twenty-one isolates of 18 fungal species were tested on water agar for their pathogenicity to eggs of Heterodera glycines. An egg-parasitic index (EPI) for each of these fungi was recorded on a scale from 0 to 10, and hatch of nematode eggs was determined after exposure to the fungi on water agar for 3 weeks at 24 C. The EPI for Verticillium chlamydosporium was 7.6, and the fungus reduced hatch...

A new anamorphic species from a Philippine tropical forest occurs as reddish-orange to orange, tuberculate stromata on unidentified homopteran larvae, and produces both Aschersonia and Hirsutella-like synanamorphs. A molecular phylogenetic analysis was conducted to determine the most appropriate generic placement for this fungus. Based on its phylogenetic relationships, a comparison of the comp...

A mycosed planthopper, Oliarus dimidiatus Berg (Hemiptera: Cixiidae), and two psocids, Heterocaecilius sp. (Psocodea: Pseudocaeciliidae) and Ectopsocus sp. (Ectopsocidae), were collected from Los Hornos and La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina between February and September 2007. Observations of mycelia growing on the host revealed that the putative fungal parasite had synnemata supporting monophi...
