This paper describes a hierarchical system that predicts one label at a time for automated student response analysis. For the task, we build a classification binary tree that delays more easily confused labels to later stages using hierarchical processes. In particular, the paper describes how the hierarchical classifier has been built and how the classification task has been broken down into b...

Research in recent years has supported the hypothesis that many properties of the electroencephalogram (EEG) are specific to an individual. In this study, the intra- and inter-individual variations of sleep EEG signals were investigated. This was carried out by analyzing the stability of the average EEG spectra individually computed for the Rechtschaffen and Kales (RK) sleep stages. Six EEG cha...

A Markov chain model has been proposed as a mechanism that generates human sleep stages. A method for estimating the parameters of the model, i.e., the transition probabilities (rates) between sleep stages, has been introduced and applied to 95 hypnograms taken from 23 subjects. The rates characterize interindividual differences and nightly variations of the sleep mechanism, related to sleep-on...

In this paper the hierarchical approach in learning and its application in building a hybrid (symbolic subsymbolic) system for emotion recognition is examined. Using the hierarchical approach, instead of creating a solid and direct mapping from a set of inputs to the set of the corresponding outputs, the process is divided into a number of stages where the goal is to construct an abstract descr...

Inspired by the generation power of generative adversarial networks (GANs) in image domains, we introduce a novel hierarchical architecture for learning characteristic topological features from a single arbitrary input graph via GANs. The hierarchical architecture consisting of multiple GANs preserves both local and global topological features and automatically partitions the input graph into r...

Growth and pubertal development are important health markers. We used the data of a longitudinal growth study on a contemporary sample of US youth to examine the relationship between peak height velocity (PHV) and Tanner staging. We observed a substantial variability in the timing of PHV across Tanner stages, which is an important consideration for clinicians when assessing growth.

The model of hierarchical complexity (MHC) provides an analytic a priori measurement of the difficulty of tasks. As part of the theory of measurement in mathematical psychology, the model of hierarchical complexity (Commons and Pekker, 2008) defines a new kind of scale. It is important to note that the orders of hierarchical complexity of tasks are postulated to form an ordinal scale. A formal ...

BACKGROUND Sleep staging is a critical step in a range of electrophysiological signal processing pipelines used in clinical routine as well as in sleep research. Although the results currently achievable with automatic sleep staging methods are promising, there is need for improvement, especially given the time-consuming and tedious nature of visual sleep scoring. NEW METHOD Here we propose a...
