Four halogen and hydrogen bonding rotaxane host systems featuring pyridinium bis-amide-iodotriazole/prototriazole and pyridinium bis-amide-iodotriazolium/prototriazolium axle components have been synthesized by CuAAC-mediated mono-stoppering chloride anion templation and post-rotaxanation methylation reactions. In competitive 45 : 45 : 10 CDCl3-CD3OD-D2O aqueous solvent media, the dicationic ha...

The first examples of halogen bonding redox-active ferrocene receptors and their anion electrochemical sensing properties are reported. Halogen bonding was found to significantly amplify the magnitude of the receptor's metallocene redox-couple's voltammetric responses for halide sensing compared to their hydrogen bonding analogues in both acetonitrile and aqueous-acetonitrile solvent media.

Halogen bonding interactions between halogenated ligands and proteins were examined using the crystal structures deposited to date in the PDB. The data was analyzed as a function of halogen bonding to main chain Lewis bases, viz. oxygen of backbone carbonyl and backbone amide nitrogen. This analysis also examined halogen bonding to side-chain Lewis bases (O, N, and S) and to the electron-rich a...

Halogen bonding, due to its directionality and tunable strength, is being increasingly utilized in self-assembling materials and crystal engineering. Using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular mechanics (OPLS/CM1Ax) calculations, multiply halogen bonded complexes of brominated imidazole and pyridine are investigated along with their potential in construction of self-assembling architec...

The synthesis and anion-recognition properties of the first halogen-bonding rotaxane host to sense anions in water is described. The rotaxane features a halogen-bonding axle component, which is stoppered with water-solubilizing permethylated β-cyclodextrin motifs, and a luminescent tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II)-based macrocycle component. (1) H NMR anion-binding titrations in D2 O reveal the ha...

The spectroscopic methods UV-Vis absorption, FT-IR and (13)C and (19)F NMR demonstrate that 1,2-diiodoperfluoroethane (DIPFE) and 1,6-diiodoperfluorohexane (DIPFH) display strong halogen bonding with halide anions. A 1 : 1 stoichiometry of DIPFE or DIPFH with halide anion is confirmed, and the bonding constants and molar extinction coefficients are obtained. With the same halide, DIPFH possesse...

Trends in the properties of normal valent and multivalent halogen-oxygen bonding are examined for the isomers of the halogen polyoxide families of the types (YXO2) and (YXO3), Y = Cl, Br, I, H, CH(3), X = Cl, Br, I. A qualitative model is formulated on the relationship between the X-O bond distance variations, the ionic character of the bonding, and the degree of halogen valence. The relative s...

The electronic structures and band gaps of silicene (the Si analogue of graphene) adsorbed with halogen elements are studied using the density functional theory based screened exchange local density approximation method. It is found that the band gaps of silicene adsorbed with F, Cl, Br and I have a nonmonotonic change as the periodic number of the halogen elements increases. This is attributed...

In the present study we have characterized the halogen bonding in selected molecules H3N-ICF3 (1-NH 3 ), (PH3)2C-ICF3 (1-CPH 3 ), C3H7Br-(IN2H2C3)2C6H4 (2-Br), H2-(IN2H2C3)2C6H4 (2-H 2 ) and Cl-(IC6F5)2C7H10N2O5 (3-Cl), containing from one halogen bond (1-NH 3 , 1-CPH 3 ) up to four connections in 3-Cl (the two Cl-HN and two Cl-I), based on recently proposed ETS-NOCV analysis. It was found base...

Aligning polymeric nanostructures up to macroscale in facile ways remains a challenge in materials science and technology. Here we show polymeric self-assemblies where nanoscale organization guides the macroscopic alignment up to millimetre scale. The concept is shown by halogen bonding mesogenic 1-iodoperfluoroalkanes to a star-shaped ethyleneglycol-based polymer, having chloride end-groups. T...
