We test for universal patterns in cultural evolution by Guttman scaling on two different worldwide samples of archaeological traditions and on well-known archaeological sequences. The evidence is generally consistent with universal evolutionary sequences. We also present evidence for some punctuated evolutionary events. [

A. In this paper we discuss the convergence of an algorithm for metric and nonmetric multidimensional scaling that is very similar to the C-matrix algorithm of Guttman. The paper improves some earlier results in two respects. In the first place the analysis is extended to cover general Minkovski metrics, in the second place a more elementary proof of convergence based on results of Rober...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate, by age, the performance of 2 disability measures based on needing help: one using 5 classic activities of daily living (ADL) and another using an expanded set of 14 activities including instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), walking, getting outside, and ADL (IADL/ADL). METHODS Guttman and item response theory (IRT) scaling methods are used with a large (N = 2...

This is an entry for The Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science, to be published by Wiley in 2005. A large number of computerized scaling techniques were developed in the wake of the pioneering work of Shepard, Kruskal, and Guttman [4, 5, 6, 8, 9]. There have been various attempts to bring some order into this bewildering variety of techniques. Books such as Roskam [7], or review arti...

This paper presents results from a project in which instructionally-sequenced domains were defined for purposes of constructing measures that that conform to an ideal in Guttman scaling and Rasch measurement. A fundamental idea in these measurement systems is that every person higher on the measurement scale can do everything that lower-level persons can do, plus at least one more thing. This i...

This article introduces a model of ordinal unidimensional measurement known as Mokken scale analysis. Mokken scaling is based on principles of Item Response Theory (IRT) that originated in the Guttman scale. I compare the Mokken model with both Classical Test Theory (reliability or factor analysis) and parametric IRT models (especially with the oneparameter logistic model known as the Rasch mod...

The theory of quantification is a method of statistical data analysis of categorical data. In other words, this is a kind of data theory and is closely related to optimum scaling method. This method has been mainly developed by Guttman in Israel and Hayashi in Japan. The multidimensional scaling method, which has been recently developed, is considered to be a continuation of the theory of quant...
