Xylopia laevigata, popularly known as "meiú" and "pindaíba", is a medicinal plant used in the folk medicine of the Brazilian Northeast for several purposes. The chemical constituents of the essential oil from leaves of X. laevigata, collected from wild plants growing at three different sites of the remaining Atlantic forest in Sergipe State (Brazilian Northeast), were analyzed by GC/FID and GC/...

Terpenoids represent a valuable class of bioactive fine chemicals and are therefore attractive targets for synthetic modification; modulation of their natural properties may lead to new medicinal and agrochemical compounds with improved properties. However, the complexity of the hydrocarbon skeletons and the often significant chemical instability of many terpenoids can present a formidable chal...

Plants release complex mixtures of volatiles, including chiral constituents. In the search for the biologically relevant plant odorants, gas chromatography linked to electrophysiological recordings from single receptor neurons has been employed. In heliothine moths, including the females of the Eurasian cotton bollworm moth Helicoverpa armigera, a major type of receptor neurons is identified, s...

Hydro-distilled volatile oils from the flowers and leaves of Eupatorium cannabinum L. which gathered in Touchal on Mountain Alborz (Tehran province) in Iran were investigated mainly by a combination of GC and GC/MS. Thirty-nine components were identified in the oils. The main constituents of the essential oils in flowers and leaves were germacrene D (27.3%, 37.1%), gemacrene B (12.4%, 11.7%) an...

The constituents of the essential oil of Stachys laxa Boiss. & Buhse growing wild in Iran were investigated by GC-MS for the first time. Thirty-three constituents were identified. Germacrene-D (40.1%), b -caryophylene (16.7%), b -phellandrene (5.5%), caryophyllene oxide (4.6%), linalool (3.2%) and ?-cadinol (2.6%) were found to be the major constituents of the oil.

The essential oil (EO) obtained by hydrodistillation from Teucrium polium L. was analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Antioxidant activity was evaluated through DPPH assay and Beta-carotene/linoleic acid assay. Twenty one components were identified representing (90.4%) of the EO. Main constituents of the essential oil were found as Spathulenol (15.06%...

The sesquiterpene cyclase aristolochene synthase from Penicillium roquefortii (PR-AS) has evolved to catalyse with high specificity (92%) the conversion of farnesyl diphosphate (FDP) to the bicyclic hydrocarbon (+)-aristolochene, the natural precursor of several fungal toxins. Here we report that PR-AS converts the unnatural FDP isomer 7-methylene farnesyl diphosphate to (+)-aristolochene via t...

The essential oils associated with the flowers of Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray were extracted and characterized via hydrodistillation and Gas Chromatography. Hydrodistillation was done in an all-glass Clevenger-type apparatus. The extracts from the hydrodistillation were subjected to gas chromatography where the components of the essential oils were separated based on their molecular ...
