INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil on germ tube formation by Candida albicans isolated from denture wearers. METHODS Ten C. albicans isolates recovered from denture wearers were tested using 10% fetal bovine serum with or without 4% R. officinalis essential oil. RESULTS The essential oil from R. officinalis completely in...
Yeast cells of Candida albicans are induced by serum at 37 degrees C to produce germ tubes, the first step in a transition from yeast to hyphal growth. Previously, it has been shown that the active component is not serum albumin but is present in the dialysable fraction of serum. In this study, serum induction of germ-tube formation is shown to occur even in the presence of added exogenous nitr...
Concentrations of (E,E)-farnesol needed to inhibit germ tube formation were determined for Candida albicans strains A72 and SC5314 by using six different conditions known to trigger germination. For defined media, 1 to 2 microM farnesol was sufficient. However, with serum at 2 to 20%, up to 250 microM farnesol was required. Farnesol blocked germ tube formation but did not block elongation of ex...
Physiological races of powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) cause different symptoms in eight melon lines. Infection by races 1, 2, and 5 was examined in different melon lines. After a compatible reaction, conidia germination, haustorium initiation from the germ tube, germ tube branching, and sporulation occurred within 12, 24, 48, and 120 h, respectively, and the conidia matured within 240 h. ...
The virulence factors of Candida albicans are germ tube and biofilm formation, adherence to host tissues, and production of hydrolytic enzymes. This study investigated the effect of Dodonaea viscosa var. angustifolia extract on the germ tube and biofilm formation of C. albicans. Serum containing the three subinhibitory concentrations of leaf extract was inoculated with C. albicans, incubated, a...
A total of 681 vaginal isolates of germ tube-positive or germ tube-untested white, yeastlike fungi obtained from patients in various cities of the United States were tested for the presence of Candida stellatoidea (type I). Only 1 of the 681 isolates was identified as C. stellatoidea.
We describe and partially characterize the isolation of a germ-tube-positive revertant from Candida albicans B311V6. This revertant has all of the properties of a germ-tube-forming strain of C. albicans except that it appears to have a nutrition defect.
In nature Sclerotium Rolfsii attacks the hosts usually at their foot. In a case was observed by the author a Hibiscus plant attacked at about a meter above the ground. By what means the pathogene reached at that height is still unknown. It may be possible that the infection has been caused by basidiospores transported by flow of air. It is therefore interesting to know the relation of germinati...
In the development of hyphal germ tubes of Candida albicans, a band of septin forms at the base of the germ tube (basal septin band). Later, a septin ring forms, which organizes the first septum within the germ tube (septin ring). We have investigated the role of the Nim1 kinases, Gin4 and Hsl1, in the formation of these septin structures. We show that during germ tube formation, Gin4 is requir...
We compared the germ tube test for the direct identification of Candida albicans from positive blood culture bottles, with results obtained from subcultured colonies. The direct germ tube test was 87.1% sensitive and 100% specific for the identification of C. albicans when the results obtained from fungal colonies were compared.
