In this document we present the work done to date and planned future work of the GEANT TF-NGN working group studying the potential benefits (to end users and NREN operators) and feasibility of deploying a Less than Best Effort (LBE) service on GÉANT and NREN networks. We present a brief overview of the evolution of the case for LBE, through the IETF diffserv WG and the Internet2 QBone project, ...

This paper presents a simulation of the spectroscopic performance of two large CZT coplanar detectors, 1.5 1.5 cm area and 1.0 cm thick, with coplanar anodes. A code, based on the GEANT libraries and classical Monte Carlo sampling, was developed to simulate experimental scenarios. This code adapts the GEANT capabilities for simulating complex detection systems for spectroscopic studies. Detecto...

The results from a study on the behavior of the GEANT 3.21 Monte Carlo program are presented. The purpose was to study the diierent options available for hadronic interactions, and where possible to compare with data. and ? hadrons were studied at discrete momenta from 100 MeV/c to 1.0 GeV/c. The main conclusion is that the hadronic package currently employed in the CBGEANT Monte Carlo is wrong...

In this chapter, we present some of the latest developments related to the provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) in today’s networks and the associated network management structures that are or will be deployed to support them. We first give a brief overview of the most important Quality of Service proposals in the areas of Layer 2 (L2) and Layer 3 (L3) QoS provisioning in backbone networks,...

Network robustness is something all providers are striving for without being able to know all the aspects it encompasses. A key aspect of network robustness concerns its sensitivity to internal failures. In this paper, we describe a methodology allowing an AS to study the sensitivity of its network to router and link failures. We provide an open-source tool implementing the sensitivity model of...

Track parallelisation of GEANT-based detector simulations, worked out for a parallel computer, is described. Its implementation in a T9000 based TN310 computer (16 processors) is explained in detail. With the help of the shower tracking example Gexam1 we show that the speedup obtained is satisfactory for high energies and enough initial particles. Load balancing policies are discussed.

Two MiniPlug calorimeters, designed to measure the energy and lateral position of particles in the (forward) pseudorapidity region of 3.6 < |η| < 5.2 of the CDF detector, have been recently installed as part of the Run II CDF upgrade at the Tevatron p̄p collider. They consist of lead/liquid scintillator read out by wavelength shifting fibers arranged in a pixel-type towerless geometry suitable f...
