Composite materials utilizing the sandwich structure are a basic family of materials and possess a highly increasing use in modern industrial applications. Since the traditional approach to structural design and material selection tends to be replaced by the Fracture mechanics approach, it is worth understanding the way that the Fracture mechanics approach is applied. The traditional approach t...

X-ray methods were used to measure the residual stress near a fracture surface of a sintered composite system of A&03/ Sic. A specimen bent at three points with different notch radii was used to measure h-acture toughness. Effects of the notch radii on the stress intensity factor Kp were measured during the initiation of the crack. Experimental results agreed with fracture mechanics theory.

The knowledge of load bearing characteristics and failure of material is very important for mechanical engineers. Various metallic, non metallic and composite materials are used in different application. In view of this, the main objective of the present work is to analyze the influence of Aluminum Oxide filler on Fracture Toughness properties of Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) E-Glass Fiber reinforce...

The fracture toughness of three new compositional variants of the Zr-Ti-Be-LTM (Late Transition Metal) family of bulk metallic glasses (BMG’s) are studied in the as-cast and annealed condition. Quaternary Zr-Ti-Cu-Be alloys consistently had linear elastic fracture toughness values greater than 80 MPa·m, while Vitreloy 1, a Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be alloy, had an average fracture toughness of 48.5 MPa·m wi...

This paper focuses on some fracture toughness tests performed on the pre-cracked Brazilian specimens of rock-like materials. Also the effect of rock fracture filling on the fracture toughness was considered experimentally.  Fracture toughness is a key parameter for studying the crack propagation and fragmentation processes in rock structures. Fracture mechanics is an applicable tool to improve ...

A sound knowledge of mechanical properties of rocks at high temperatures and pressures is essential for modelling volcanological problems such as fracture of lava flows and dike emplacement. In particular, fracture toughness is a scale invariant material property of a rock that describes its resistance to tensile failure. A new fracture mechanics apparatus has been constructed enabling fracture...

Failures in composite materials occur mainly due to interlaminar fracture, also called delamination, between laminates. This indicates that characterizing interlaminar fracture toughness is the most effective factor in the fracture of composite materials. This study reports investigation on mixed-mode interlaminar fracture behaviour in woven carbon fibre/polyetherimide (CF/PEI) thermoplastic co...

Rapid development of engineering activities expands through a variety of rock engineering processes such as drilling, blasting, mining and mineral processing. These activities require rock dynamic fracture mechanics method to characterize the rock behavior. Dynamic fracture toughness is an important parameter for the analysis of engineering structures under dynamic loading. Several experimental...

In this paper, the use of a cohesive-zone approach to model the mode-I fracture of adhesive joints made from a polymer-matrix composite is demonstrated. Cohesive-zone parameters were obtained by matching numerical results to experimental observations. It is shown that there is a distinction between the characteristic strength of the interface associated with the toughness, and the intrinsic coh...

The purpose of this study was to compare the properties of 2 new dual-cure, bulk-fill restorative composite resins to those of a hybrid composite resin material. Depth of cure, fracture toughness, porosity, microleakage, and volumetric shrinkage properties were examined. With the exception of fracture toughness, significant differences were found among materials. Compared to the incrementally p...
