The dilaton free energy density in external static gravitational field is found. We use the real time formulation of the finite temperature field theory and the free energy density is computed to the first order of the string parameter α′. We obtain the thermal corrections to the α′ modified Einstein gravity action. PACS numbers: 4.60.+n, 11.17.+y, 05.70.Ce Typeset using REVTEX 1
We study to what extent the three-dimensional SU(N) + adjoint Higgs theory can be used as an effective theory for finite temperature SU(N) gauge theory, with N = 2, 3. The parameters of the 3d theory are computed in 2-loop perturbation theory in terms of T /Λ MS , N, N f. The perturbative effective potential of the 3d theory is computed to two loops for N = 2. While the Z(N) symmetry probably d...
The nucleon mass shift is calculated using chiral counting arguments and a virial expansion, without and with the ∆. At all temperatures, the mass shift and damping rate are dominated by the ∆. Our results are compared with the empirical analysis of Leutwyler and Smilga, as well as results from heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large N c (number of color) limit. We show that unitar...
Finite temperature properties of a non-Fermi liquid system is one of the most challenging probelms in current understanding of strongly correlated electron systems. The paradigmatic arena for studying non-Fermi liquids is in one dimension, where the concept of a Luttinger liquid has arisen. The existence of a critical point at zero temperature in one dimensional systems, and the fact that exper...
We study charmoinum correlators and spectral functions at finite temperature within the quenched approximation using isotropic lattices with lattice spacing a−1 = 4.86 GeV and 9.72 GeV. Although we observe some medium modifications of the ground state charmonium spectral function above deconfinement, we find that ground state charmonia (J/ψ and ηc) exist in the deconfined phase at least up to t...
Confinement may be more easily demonstrated at finite temperature using the Polyakov loop than at zero temperature using the Wilson loop. A natural mechanism for confinement can arise via the coupling of the adjoint Polyakov loop to F 2 μν . We demonstrate this mechanism with a one-loop calculation of the effective potential for SU(2) gluons in a background field consisting of a non-zero color ...
Within the MIT bag model picture of QCD, we have studied the stability of finite size strangelets at finite temperature with baryon number A ≤ 100. The light quarks u and d are considered massless while mass of the s quark is taken as 150 MeV. Using discrete eigen energies of the non-interacting quarks in the bag, grand canonical partition function is constructed and then the free energy is min...
We construct the sphaleron for several temperature dependent effective potentials. We determine the sphaleron energy as a function of temperature and demonstrate that the sphaleron energy at a given temperature T is well approximated by the sphaleron energy at temperature zero scaled by the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs field at temperatures T and zero. We address the cosm...
We develop a statistical theory of probabilistic sequence alignments derived from a 'thermodynamic' partition function at finite temperature. Such alignments are a generalization of those obtained from information-theoretic approaches. Finite-temperature statistics can be used to characterize the significance of an alignment and the reliability of its single element pairs.
