In guitar performance, fingering is an important factor. In particular, the fingering of the left hand comprises various relationships between the finger and the string, such as the finger touching/pressing/releasing the strings. The recognition of the precise fingering is applied to a self-learning support system, which is able to detect strings being muted by a finger, and which transcribes m...

We present a method to recuperate fingerings for a given piece of violin music in order to recreate the timbre of a given audio recording of the piece. This is achieved by first analyzing an audio signal to determine the most likely sequence of two-dimensional fingerboard locations (string number and location along the string), which recovers elements of violin fingering relevant to timbre. Thi...

The present paper analytically discusses the phenomenon of fingering in double phase flow through homogenous porous media by using variational iteration method. Fingering phenomenon is a physical phenomenon which occurs when a fluid contained in a porous medium is displaced by another of lesser viscosity which frequently occurred in problems of petroleum technology. In the current investigation...

In this paper we address the problem of mapping guitar music score into one of possible alternative fingering sequences on the fretboard grid. We use dynamic programming (DP) to model the decision process of a guitarist choosing the optimal fingering sequence. To estimate the DP cost functions based on examples of guitar fingering transcriptions (tablatures) we developed an original method name...

The effect of drainage front morphology on gaseous diffusion through partially saturated porous media is analyzed using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Flow regimes for immiscible displacement in porous media have been characterized as stable displacement, capillary fingering, and viscous fingering. The dominance of a flow regime is associated with the relative magnitudes of gravity, viscou...

A prototype system, dubbed “Dactylize,” for collecting fingering data automatically from actual piano performances is described. The solution promises to be an economical and accurate tool for developing corpora related to piano fingering. Evaluation of an early prototype suggests accuracy over 99% at rates up to 12.5 notes per second.

The growth of fingering patterns in dewetting nanofluids (colloidal solutions of thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles) has been followed in real time using contrast-enhanced video microscopy. The fingering instability on which we focus here arises from evaporatively driven nucleation and growth in a nanoscopically thin precursor solvent film behind the macroscopic contact line. We find that well...

We study flow problems in unsaturated porous media. Our main interest is the gravity driven penetration of a dry material, a situation in which fingering effects can be observed experimentally and numerically. The flow is described by either a Richards or a two-phase model. The important modelling aspect regards the capillary pressure relation which can include static hysteresis and dynamic cor...

Mixing efficiency at low Reynolds numbers can be enhanced by exploiting hydrodynamic instabilities that induce heterogeneity and disorder in the flow. The unstable displacement of fluids with different viscosities, or viscous fingering, provides a powerful mechanism to increase fluid-fluid interfacial area and enhance mixing. Here we describe the dissipative structure of miscible viscous finger...
