coccidiosis and gizzard erosion are rare conditions in cage bird. a male zebra finch was presented with a history of watery diarrhea, anorexia, ruffled feathers, weight loss, and lethargy and died finally. gross necropsy revealed small areas of erosions and hemorrhages on the gizzard wall. the intestine was oedematous. the spleen appeared pale and small. the testes were asymmetric.histologicall...
We propose a new type of confocal microscope using Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH). Presented here is a confocal configuration of FINCH using a phase pinhole and point illumination that is able to suppress out-of-focus information from the recorded hologram and hence combine the super-resolution capabilities of FINCH with the sectioning capabilities of confocal microscopy.
We studied the reproductive ecology of the Ringed Warbling-Finch Poospiza torquata and the Cinnamon Warbling-Finch P. ornata during four breeding seasons in the Reserve of Ñacuñán, western Argentina. We described the breeding biology of both species, examined temporal variation in reproductive parameters under contrasting weather conditions, and compared reproductive traits of these sympatric P...
We have now tested the Finch Hypothesis. Using data from ROARMAP institutional Green OA mandates and data from ROAR on institutional repositories, we found that deposit number and rate is significantly correlated with mandate strength (classified as 1-12): The stronger the mandate, the more the deposits. The strongest mandates generate deposit rates of 70%+ within 2 years of adoption, compared ...
Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) records holograms under incoherent illumination. FINCH was implemented with two focal length diffractive lenses on a spatial light modulator (SLM). Improved image resolution over previous single lens systems and at wider bandwidths was observed. For a given image magnification and light source bandwidth, FINCH with two lenses of close focal leng...
The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is the first species of passerine bird with a complete genome sequence, making it an exciting time for avian evolutionary biology. Native to Australia and the Lesser Sunda Islands, this species has long played an important role in the study of ecology, behaviour and neuroscience. With the sequencing of its genome, the Zebra Finch now also represents an impo...
Like humans, birds that exhibit vocal learning have relatively delayed telencephalon maturation, resulting in a disproportionately smaller brain prenatally but enlarged telencephalon in adulthood relative to vocal non-learning birds. To determine if this size difference results from evolutionary changes in cell-autonomous or cell-interdependent developmental processes, we transplanted telenceph...
—The Vegetarian Finch, Platyspiza crassirostris ! is a relatively unstudied Darwin’s finch that appears to be in decline in the Galápagos Islands. We monitored 11 nests of Vegetarian Finches during 2013 and 2014 on Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos, and found that 10 of these were infested with an invasive parasitic fly, Philornis downsi. This is the first report of P. downsi attacking this bird spe...
Towards the completion of the work it was realized that the results obtained by the nesslerization method described in Parts 2-4 of this series of papers tended to differ from those obtained by the micro-Kjeldahl digestion of a larger quantity of serum followed by titration (Young, Bishop, Hickmans and Williams, 1949; Young, Poyner-Wall, Humphreys, Finch and Broadbent, 1950; Poyner-Wall and Fin...
