Chirped fiber Bragg gratings are used as low-loss, dispersion compensation modules for telecommunications applications. Here we use them to make an optical processor that compresses the bandwidth of electronic signals before digitization by an analog-to-digital converter. ©2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (230.0250) Optoelectronics, (060.2360) Fiber optics and optical communications ...

We report the first demonstration of silica-based thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) working in the 1.65 – 1.7 μm waveband. Up to 29 dB small signal gain and noise figure as low as 6.5 dB are achieved. OCIS codes: (060.2320) Fiber optics amplifiers and oscillators; (060.2330) Fiber optics communications

A neural-network-based approach is presented to efficiently implement digital backpropagation (DBP). For a 32×100 km fiber-optic link, the resulting “learned” DBP significantly reduces the complexity compared to conventional DBP implementations. We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of pump depletion effects on extreme statistics observed in fiber Raman amplifiers. We also report on the impact of the dispersion of the fiber. OCIS codes: (060.4370) Nonlinear optics, fibers; (060.2320) Fiber optics amplifiers.

A fiber optics image-transferring element is nonisoplanatic over a surface region containing only a few fundamental resolution elements, and no meaningful or consistent evaluation of a fiber optics image can be made by examining such a nonisoplanatic region. A holographic scheme offers a solution to the problem of fiber optics image evaluation based upon examination of a nonisoplanatic region. ...
