We present direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow with passive Lagrangian polymers. To understand the polymer behavior we investigate the behavior of infinitesimal line elements and calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of finite-time Lyapunov exponents and from them the corresponding Cramer's function for the channel flow. We study the statistics of polymer elon...
A lower bound for the invariants of the configuration tensor for some well-known differential models
A method will be given to determine lower bounds for the invariants of a configuration tensor in 3D flows. For some well-known differential models these lower bounds will be given. Except for the Giesekus and the FENE-P model the lower bounds are the values in equilibrium.
A very stiff finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE)-Fraenkel spring is proposed to replace the rigid rod in the bead-rod model. This allows the adoption of a fast predictor-corrector method so that large time steps can be taken in Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations without over- or understretching the stiff springs. In contrast to the simple bead-rod model, BD simulations with beads and F...
We consider a polymeric fluid model, consisting of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled to a non-symmetric Fokker-Planck equation. First, steady states and exponential convergence to them in relative entropy are proved for the linear Fokker-Planck equation in the Hookean case. The FENE model is also addressed proving the existence of stationary states and the convergence towards t...
For many commonly used viscoelastic constitutive equations, it is well known that the limiting behavior of Oldroyd-B model. Here, we compare response simplified linear form Phan-Thien–Tanner model (“sPTT”) [Phan-Thien and Tanner, “A new equation derived from network theory,” J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 2, 353–365 (1977)] finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (“FENE”) dumbbell follows Peterlin ...
The relaxation of dilute polymer solutions following stretch in uniaxial extensional flow is investigated via Brownian dynamic simulations of a flexible freely-draining bead-rod chain. The bead-rod chain simulations are compared to Brownian dynamic simulations of a FENE dumbbell and numerical calculations of a FENE-PM chain. A universal relaxation curve for the stress decay from steady-state is...
We studied coupled systems of the Fokker–Planck equation and the Navier–Stokes equation modeling the Hookean and the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE)-type polymeric flows. We proved the continuous embedding and compact embedding theorems in weighted spaces that naturally arise from related entropy estimates. These embedding estimates are shown to be sharp. For the Hookean polymeric ...
Recently singular solutions have been discovered in purely elongational flows of visco-elastic fluids. We surmise that these solutions are the mathematical structures underlying the so-called birefringent strands seen experimentally. In order to facilitate future experimental studies of these we derive a number of asymptotic results for the scaling of the width and extension of the near-singula...
The effect of stress diffusivity is examined in both the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P models of a viscoelastic fluid in the low Reynolds (Stokes) limit for a 2D periodic time-dependent flow. A local analytic solution can be obtained when assuming a flow of the form u =Wi (x, y), whereWi is the Weissenberg number. In this case the width of the birefringent strand of the polymer stress scales with the ad...
We prove global well-posedness for the microscopic FENE model under a sharp boundary requirement. The well-posedness of the FENE model that consists of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and the Fokker-Planck equation has been studied intensively, mostly with the natural flux boundary condition. Recently it was illustrated by C. Liu and H. Liu [2008, SIAM J. Appl. Math., 68(5):1304–1315]...
