A comparative histologic effects of chloroquine, fansidar, amalar and cotecxin on the liver was carried out on thirty (30) male and female albino rats for the period of twenty eight days (28) days. The liver with chloroquine administration showed congestion of the central veins and the pericentral hepacytes had mild degeneration as against the control group without the drug. However, in the fan...

The problem of resistance by malaria causing parasites to drugs in current usage, or of malaria vectors to pesticides has prompted nations to refocus attention on implementing research on new drug development and new pesticides development. The world appears to be rediscovering the importance of traditional medicines and people are resorting to use traditional medicines in different names such ...

Incomplete malaria control efforts have resulted in a worldwide increase in resistance to drugs used to treat the disease. A complex array of mutations underlying antimalarial drug resistance complicates efficient monitoring of parasite populations and limits the success of malaria control efforts in regions of endemicity. To improve the surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance, we...

BACKGROUND A pre-packaged fixed-dose formulation of chloroquine (CQ) and sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (S/P) combination (Homapak) is widely used for the treatment of falciparum malaria in Ugandan children. It is however a product whose pharmacokinetics and interactions have not been studied. OBJECTIVES To explore possible pharmacokinetic interactions between CQ and S/P during co-administration, ...

The combination of pyrimethamine and suiphonamide is effective prophylaxis against Plasmo&dm falciparum malaria (Lucas et al., 1969) and is specifically recommended for use in areas where chloroquine-resistant malaria is encountered such as Kenya (British National Formulary, 1983). The sulphonamide component of Fansidar is sulfadoxine, and we believe it is this sulphonamide which precipitated t...

background: malaria remains the world’s most devastating human parasitic infection. our goal was to assess the capacity of increasing concentrations of five antimalarial drugs (fansidartm, halfantm, quinine, coartemtm and chloroquine phosphate) to elicit the generation of methemoglobin in three human erythrocyte genotypes (hb aa, hb as and hb ss). materials and methods: spectrophotometric metho...
