In this case study, we compare two methods for filtering external motion in time dependent volume data sets acquired from confocal microscopy. The pros and cons of a landmark based and a voxel based method are discussed. We show that filtering external motion is an essential first step for the visualization of confocal data.

BACKGROUND Any landmark-based regional anaesthetic technique raises two important issues. The first is the accuracy of placement of the needle and thus the local anaesthetic in a 'blind' technique and the second is the potential for damage to adjacent structures. We designed a prospective, blinded study in an adult general surgical population to evaluate with ultrasound the placement of the nee...

A remembered saccade target could be encoded in egocentric coordinates such as gaze-centered, or relative to some external allocentric landmark that is independent of the target or gaze (landmark-centered). In comparison to egocentric mechanisms, very little is known about such a landmark-centered representation. Here, we used an event-related fMRI design to identify brain areas supporting thes...

This paper describes the adoption of the Ethernet/IP standard in the development of a specification for the interconnection of mining equipment as part of an industry-sponsored Landmark longwall automation project. Longwall mining is used extensively worldwide and accounts for the majority of underground coal production in Australia and the USA. Full automation of the longwall mining process is...

background: lumbar puncture (lp) is an essential procedure in the diagnosis and treatment of several critical situations. this procedure is routinely performed by palpating external landmarks to fi nd the most appropriate inter-spinous space. in the current study, we compared surface landmark and ultrasound (us) guided lp in different aspects. materials and methods: this clinical trial study wa...

In landmark-based navigation systems for mobile robots, sensory perceptions (e.g., laser or sonar scans) are used to identify the robot’s current location or to construct internal representations, maps, of the robot’s environment. Being based on an external frame of reference (which is not subject to incorrigible drift errors such as those occurring in odometry-based systems), landmark-based ro...

This article presents a vision-based method for mobile robot localization in partially known environments. Simple, unobtrusive artificial landmarks are used as external localization aids. The landmarks are labelled with unique code patterns, what enables unambiguous global localization. The analysis is presented which enables prediction of the uncertainty of the position and orientation of the ...

In this paper, we describe our approach and its results as part of the MediaEval 2013 Retrieving Diverse Social Images Task evaluation. We illustrate a content-based technique relying on a single type of visual descriptors that makes it possible to identify groups of similar instances of a given landmark and select the most representative images from each such group out of a set of relatively n...
