Local instillation of thymoxamine eye drops (0-1%) completely reversed the mydriasis produced by ephedrine (5%) but not that produced by ephedrine (5%) together with homatropine (0-5%). Small but significant changes in accomodation were found with ephedrine and with thymoxamine, as well as the larger expected changes with homatropine.
1. We investigated the effects of the chronic administration of a sympathomimetic agent on energy expenditure, protein metabolism and levels of thyroid hormones and catecholamines in 10 obese subjects after a 6-week very-low-calorie-diet programme (1965 kJ, 60 g of protein, 45 g of carbohydrates). L-(-)-Ephedrine hydrochloride (50 mg three times a day by mouth) or placebo were administered duri...
Ephedrine and herbal ephedra preparations have been shown to induce a small-to-moderate weight loss. Owing to reports on serious cardiovascular events, they were banned from the US market in 2004. There have been no large controlled studies on the possible association between prescribed ephedrine/caffeine and cardiovascular events in general. The authors linked data from four different sources ...
BACKGROUND Prevention of intraoperative hypothermia has become a standard of operative care. Since ephedrine has a thermogenic effect and it is frequently used to treat hypotension during anesthesia, this study was designed to determine the effect of ephedrine on intraoperative hypothermia of patients who are undergoing spine surgery. METHODS Twenty-four patients were randomly divided to rece...
Ephedrine is a long-studied stimulant available both as a prescription and over-the-counter medication, as well as an ingredient in widely marketed herbal preparations, and is also used as a precursor for the illicit synthesis of methamphetamine. Ephedrine is related to phenylpropanolamine, a decongestant removed from the market place due to concerns that its use increased the risk of hemorrhag...
BACKGROUND The sympathomimetic drug ephedrine has been used intrathecally as the sole local anesthetic for labor and delivery. Because ephedrine may be a useful adjuvant to local anesthetics, the authors investigated the local anesthetic properties of ephedrine in a rat sciatic nerve block model and the underlying mechanism in cultured cells stably expressing Na channels. METHODS After approv...
We designed a randomized, double-blinded study to determine the efficacy and safety of 0.5 mg/kg intravenous ephedrine for the prevention of hypotension during spinal anesthesia for cesarean delivery. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups: ephedrine group (n=21) and control group (n=21). Intravenous preload of 15 mL/kg lactated Ringer's solution was given. Shortly after the spinal in...
The mechanism of the pressor response to ephedrine is controversial. In the present study. i.v. injections of ephedrine increased systemic and pulmonary arterial pressure, and i.a. injections decreased hindlimb blood flow in a dose-related manner. Responses to ephedrine were inhibited by alpha-receptor blocking agents and were not attenuated by blockade of the norepinephrine reuptake transporte...
l-Ephedrine is an active ingredient in several herbal formulations with a mechanism of action similar to amphetamine and methamphetamine. However, its potential to damage dopaminergic terminals in the caudate/putamen (CPu) has yet to be fully evaluated. The studies here used in vivo brain microdialysis experiments to determine the systemic doses and extracellular brain levels of l-ephedrine nec...
BACKGROUND During labor, ephedrine is widely used to prevent or to treat maternal arterial hypotension and restore uterine perfusion pressure to avoid intrapartum fetal asphyxia. However, the effects of ephedrine on uterine blood flow have not been studied during uterine contractions. The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of ephedrine on uterine artery velocities and resistance ind...
