Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection of intestinal epithelial cells leads to localized depletion of the microtubule cytoskeleton, an effect that is dependent on delivery of type III translocated effector proteins EspG and Orf3 (designated EspG2) to the site of depletion. Microtubule depletion involved disruption rather than displacement of microtubules.

Escherichia coli strains of serotype O51:H40 were studied with regard to the presence of several virulence properties and their genetic diversity and enteropathogenicity in rabbit ileal loops. This serotype encompasses potential enteropathogenic strains mostly classified as being atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains, which are genetically closer to enterohemorrhagic E. coli than to ...

Virulence characteristics of diarrheal outbreak-associated Escherichia coli O55:NM, O126:NM, and O111:NM were examined. The E. coli O55:NM strains were atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), while the E. coli O126:NM and O111:NM strains should be classified as enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC). The contributions of EPEC and EAggEC to the human disease burden in Japan might be significantly ...

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) induces formation of actin pedestals in infected host cells. Agents that inhibit the activity of Rho, Rac, and Cdc42, including Clostridium difficile toxin B (ToxB), compactin, and dominant negative Rho, Rac, and Cdc42, did not inhibit formation of actin pedestals. In contrast, treatment of HeLa cells with ToxB inhibited EPEC invasion. Thus, Rho, Rac, an...

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) O146 strain isolated from a 1-year-old child with acute diarrhea in Delhi who recovered completely. The multidrug transporter (mdtABCD) gene, responsible for drug resistance, is present. The strain also contains the astA gene, an additional virulence determinant.

The enteropathogenic Escherichia coli adherence factor (EAF) probe detects isolates of enteropathogenic E. coli that exhibit localized adherence to HEp-2 cells. A 21-base oligonucleotide probe was constructed on the basis of a sequence from within the 1-kb EAF probe and was shown to have greater sensitivity and specificity than the EAF fragment probe in detecting localized adherent E. coli.

A retrospective review of all stool samples obtained from children aged < 16 years with diarrhoea from University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, from 1978 to 1997 was undertaken to ascertain the pattern of bacterial pathogens causing diarrhoea in children in an urban area in Malaysia. Of 26444 stool samples processed, 2989 (11%) were positive. The five most common bacterial path...

We analyzed the prevalence of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) markers and common phenotypes in 2,164 E. coli isolates from 282 DEC-positive samples. Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) were very diverse and were not correlated with diarrhea. Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) estA and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) belonged to a few phenotypes and were signif...

The characterization of nine atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains expressing localized adherence in HeLa cells in the absence of the bundle-forming pilus revealed a diversity of serotypes, plasmids, and virulence genes. Although the strains lacked known E. coli adhesin genes, the identification of new adhesins could contribute to the characterization of similar enteropathogenic E....
