Ectopic thyroid tissue is an uncommon embryologic aberration characterized by the presence of thyroid tissue in a site other than its usual pre-tracheal location. Single ectopic thyroid tissue is the most common variant, and the base of the tongue is the most frequent ectopic location. Dual ectopic thyroid is extremely rare, and only eleven cases have been reported in the English literature. Fu...

Ectopic thyroid is not a common disease, and a double ectopic thyroid is extremely rare. We report a recent case of dual ectopic thyroid in an 11-year-old girl mimicking mono-ectopic lingual thyroid on the anterior view of the thyroid scan. The dual ectopic thyroid was shown on the lateral view, with foci in the lingual and anterior hyoid regions, but no thyroid tissue in the pre-tracheal regio...

Lingual thyroid (LT) is a rare developmental thyroid anomaly usually affecting. Although the exact pathogenesis of this ectopic, accessory thyroid tissue is not known, it generally originates from epithelial tissue of non-obliterated thyroglossal ductus. In this report, a case of lingual thyroid in a 45- year old male patient with difficulty in breathing and swallowing complaints for five years...

The presence of simultaneous two ectopic foci of thyroid tissue (dual ectopic thyroid) is rare, and few cases have been reported in the literature. The ectopic thyroid tissue is an extremely uncommon embryological aberration due to the alterations occurring during the embryological development with incomplete migration of thyroid precursors. Commonly ectopic thyroid tissue is a midline structur...

Dual ectopic thyroid is a rare presentation of thyroid ectopia. Only a few cases have been reported in the world literature. Dual ectopic thyroid in the presence of a normally located thyroid is even rarer. We report a case of dual ectopic thyroid in the lingual and submandibular areas in a seventeen-year-old female with hypoplastic thyroid gland in its normal location. The patient presented wi...

INTRODUCTION Ectopic thyroid tissue may appear in any location along the trajectory of the thyroglossal duct from the foramen cecum to the mediastinum. Rarely, there is incomplete descent of the gland where the final resting point may be high resulting in sublingual ectopic thyroid tissue. Ectopic thyroid tissue carries a low risk of malignancy. Most recently reported neoplasms in ectopic thyro...

Thyroglossal duct and lingual thyroid ectopic lesions are exceedingly rare synchronous findings. Papillary thyroid carcinoma of these ectopic thyroid sites is well understood but still a rare finding. This case points to some management nuances in regard to ectopic thyroid screening with imaging and also shows the effectiveness of minimally invasive transoral robotic surgery for lingual thyroid.
