This paper studies the performance of selected chaos-based communication systems whose spectrum overlaps with that of conventional narrowband systems. Such a scenario may occur in normal practice when chaos-based systems are introduced while the conventional systems are still in operation. The particular chaos-based systems under study are the coherent chaos-shift-keying (CSK) system and the no...

We propose and numerically verify a novel scheme of all-optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to binary phase-shift- keying (BPSK) at 160 Gb/s using cascaded microring resonators (CMRR) on a single silicon chip. The conversion is based on large phase shift and flattened intensity-response characteristics in the CMRR. A continuous-wave light experiences different phase shifts c...

We examine reduction of phase jitter by use of in-line Butterworth filters in soliton systems in the context of differential phase-shift-keying coding. We also demonstrate numerically that the use of a Butterworth filter in a return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying system can reduce continuum background radiation.

As a special case of continuous phase frequency-shift-keying (FSK), minimum-shift keying (MSK) exhibits some different properties compared with the traditional optical phase modulation formats, such as return-to-zero (RZ) differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) and differential-quadrature-phase-shift-keying (DQPSK). In this paper, we investigated the receiver performance degradation caused by la...

We demonstrate an optical transmitter based on dynamic optical arbitrary waveform generation (OAWG) which is capable of creating high-bandwidth (THz) data waveforms in any modulation format using the parallel synthesis of multiple coherent spectral slices. As an initial demonstration, the transmitter uses only 5.5 GHz of electrical bandwidth and two 10-GHz-wide spectral slices to create 100-ns ...

To facilitate efficient two-way communication, we implemented the sliding window algorithm with configurable send and receive window sizes. To ensure reliability of our transmissions, we detected corrupted packets using either a checksum or a CRC (cyclic redundancy check), as well using LDPC (low density parity check) to do error correction. And in addition to DBPSK (differential binary phase s...

We demonstrate six-channel 160-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexed transmission over 20 100-km spans of nonzero-dispersion fiber, with a spectral efficiency of 0.53 b/s/Hz. We achieve this result using optical-time-division multiplexing with polarization bit interleaving and return-to-zero differential-phase-shift-keying modulation format. We also operate at 170.6 Gb/s per channel to emulate t...

With the growing demand in modern communication, it has become necessary to give better and efficient service to users by using better technique. Technique such as Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), Phase Shift Keying (PSK), Differential Phase shift Keying (DPSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) are very important parts of the implementation of modern communica...

Proposed and demonstrated is an all-optical modulation format conversion from a non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) signal to a phase-shift keying (PSK)-Manchester format signal using a semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SOAMZI). In the experiment, a 2.5 Gbit/s PSK-Manchester format signal was obtained from a NRZ-OOK signal and a 50 km error-free transmiss...
