A major threat to coral reefs today is the phase shift to algaldominated reefs. Algae can stress corals by overgrowing and smothering them, blocking sunlight needed for photosynthesis, and enhancing microbial growth. However, the mechanisms underlying algae-coral interactions are still poorly understood. This study examined how the tumbleweed algae Dictyota sp. affects the photophysiology of th...

The methanol extract of an assemblage of Halimeda stuposa and a Dictyota sp., yielded three natural products characteristic of Dictyota sp., and one of Halimeda sp. These included the xenicane diterpene 4-hydroxydictyolactone (1), and the diterpenes dictyol E (2), 8a,11-dihydroxypachydictyol A (3) and indole-3-carboxaldehyde (4). A minor revision of 1 and new spectroscopic data for 1 and 2 are ...

Recent studies have show that small marine herbivores with limited mobility (mesograzers) often feed on macroalgae chemically defended against fishes or sea-urchins. In order to verify the involved mechanisms of chemotaxis or chemical defense into this process in Brazilian littoral, two species of brown alga Dictyota menstrualis and Dictyota mertensii were studied against the limited mobility h...

Competition between corals and macroalgae is often assumed to occur on reefs, especially those that have undergone shifts from coral to algal dominance; however, data examining these competitive interactions, especially during the early life-history stages of corals, are scarce. We conducted a series of field and outdoor seawater-table experiments to test the hypothesis that allelopathy (chemic...

This study aimed to investigate the cardiovascular effects elicited by Dictyota pulchella, a brown alga, using in vivo and in vitro approaches. In normotensive conscious rats, CH(2)Cl(2)/MeOH Extract (CME, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) from Dictyota pulchella produced dose-dependent hypotension (-4 ± 1; -8 ± 2; -53 ± 8 and -63 ± 3 mmHg) and bradycardia (-8 ± 6; -17 ± 11; -257 ± 36 and -285 ± 27 b.p.m...

Herbivores often specialize on particular hosts that provide both food and shelter from natural enemies. It is thus often unclear whether a plant’s value as a food or its value as a safe shelter has played a larger role in selecting for specialization. Decorator crabs offer a novel opportunity to investigate the relative effects of diet vs. natural enemies in selecting for specialization becaus...

Freshly released eggs of the marine brown alga Dictyota dichotoma secrete a substance that attracts spermatozoids. This compound has been identified as n-butyl-cyclohepta-2,5-diene. It is closely related to attractants in several other brown algae and confirms that a relation exists between phylogeny and attractant compounds.

the present study was intended to standardize the protocol for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (agnps) using aqueous extract of dictyota bartayresiana j.v. lamouroux and evaluate cytotoxic potentials using brine shrimp bio-assay activity and trypan blue dye exclusion method. the reduction of pure ag+ ions was monitored by measuring the uv-vis spectrum of the solution at 200-900 nm and the...
