In Singapore, after a major outbreak of dengue in 2005, another outbreak occurred in 2007. Laboratory-based surveillance detected a switch from dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) to DENV-2. Phylogenetic analysis showed a clade replacement within DENV-2 cosmopolitan genotype, which accompanied the predominant serotype switch, and cocirculation of multiple genotypes of DENV-3.
Previous studies have compared RNA genomes from the different dengue virus serotypes by cDNA-RNA hybridization using dengue-1 virus- and dengue-2 virus-specific cDNA probes. These probes revealed that there is a close genetic relationship between dengue virus serotypes 1 and 4. In this communication, the cDNA-RNA hybridization results using dengue-3- and dengue-4-specific cDNA probes to determi...
In August 2013, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, had its first dengue outbreak. Dengue virus (DENV) RNA detection in sera or viral isolates revealed that all 222 autochthonous patients detected and three Chinese travelers from Laos (imported cases) were positive for DENV-3 serotype, while DENV-1 and DENV-4 were detected in travelers from Myanmar and Thailand during the outbreak. For 33 su...
Typing of dengue viruses was done for clinical specimens from a total of 136 patients (children under 15-years-old) suspected of having dengue virus infections and who had been admitted to Pathum Thani Provincial Hospital during the period May 1999 to April 2000. Altogether, 44 strains were isolated (isolation rate: 32.4%), consisting of 18 DEN-1, 18 DEN-2, 7 DEN-3 and 1 DEN-4. The isolation ra...
In a step towards a tetravalent dengue virus subunit vaccine which is economical to produce, highly immunogenic and stable, a hybrid dengue virus envelope (E) protein molecule has been constructed. It consists of 36 amino acids from the membrane protein, the N-terminal 288 amino acids of the dengue-2 virus E protein plus amino acids 289-424 of the dengue-3 virus E protein. It has been engineere...
Circulation of a new dengue virus (DENV)-3 genotype was recently described in Brazil and Colombia, but the precise classification of this genotype has been controversial. Here we perform phylogenetic and nucleotide-distance analyses of the envelope gene, which support the subdivision of DENV-3 strains into five distinct genotypes (GI to GV) and confirm the classification of the new South Americ...
The reintroduction of dengue virus type 3 (DENV-3) in Brazil in 2000 and its subsequent spread throughout the country was associated with genotype III viruses, the only DENV-3 genotype isolated in Brazil prior to 2002. We report here the co-circulation of two different DENV-3 genotypes in patients living in the Northern region of Brazil during the 2002-2004 epidemics. Complete genomic sequences...

Dengue type 3 viruses were isolated from patients in Martinique between 1999 and 2002. This serotype had not been detected on the island in the last 20 years. Genomic sequence determination and analysis showed great stability of the virus during the period studied.
Here we report the first full-length genome sequence of dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV-3) from a strain isolated from a patient in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2014. The genome consists of 10 635 bp and shows close similarity to circulating genotype III isolates from Singapore, suggesting possible importation, most probably during religious pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia.
