The pharmacokinetics of piperacillin-tazobactam were investigated in eight anuric intensive care patients treated by continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD). The elimination half-life of piperacillin was 4.3 +/- 1.2 h, and that of tazobactam was 5.6 +/- 1.3 h. The contribution of CVVHD to the overall elimination was relevant (>25%) for both drugs.

BACKGROUND Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) increasingly is being used to treat critically ill patients with renal disease. CRRT removes waste products but also nutrients. Our understanding of trace element CRRT clearance has been limited by poor assay sensitivity. The development of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) allows for the measurement of CRRT trace elemen...

Caspofungin pharmacokinetics was assessed in 27 critically ill patients, including 7 on continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH), 8 on continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD), and 13 not requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Caspofungin exposure during CRRT was very similar to that of the control group and comparable to that in healthy volunteers. Caspofungin clearance by...

INTRODUCTION The best modality, for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is currently uncertain and it is poorly understood how transport of different solutes, whether convective or diffusive, changes over time. METHODS We conducted a prospective cross over study in a cohort of critically ill patients, comparing small (urea and creatinine) and middle (beta2 microglobulin) molecular wei...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Methanol is a toxic alcohol that can cause significant morbidity and mortality in overdose, while ethanol is a readily available and effective antidote. Little is known about the pharmacokinetics of methanol in the presence of ethanol and vice versa. This paper explores the influence of methanol and ethanol on the pharmacokinetics of each other along with the effect of ...

INTRODUCTION Little is known about the pharmacokinetics of amikacin during continuous renal replacement therapy. METHODS This prospective observational study included patients admitted to an academic medical center who received amikacin therapy while on continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD) and had at least two serum sample concentrations measured after first-dose administration. First-...

Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) has been widely employed in the treatment of critically ill patients. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of CRRT such as continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD) and continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), in patients with acute hypernatremia following craniocerebral injury and cerebral...

Abstract Background The EMiC2 membrane is a medium cut-off haemofilter (45 kiloDalton). Little known regarding its efficacy in eliminating medium-sized cytokines sepsis. This study aimed to explore the effects of continuous veno-venous haemodialysis (CVVHD) using filter on cytokine clearance. Methods was prospective observational conducted critically ill patients with sepsis and acute kidney in...

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare, life-threatening disorder. This paper describes the case of a 39-year-old Sudanese male who presented to the emergency room with fever, jaundice, decreased level of consciousness, and worsening kidney function for 7 days, a high lactate dehydrogenase level (1947), severe thrombocytopenia (platelets 8), and numerous schistocytes in the periphe...

We present data from a patient with fulminant rhabdomyolysis (RML) after radical prostatectomy, which could be managed successfully with early initiation of continuous veno-venous haemodialysis (CVVHD). A 58-yr-old male was admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of a carcinoma of the prostate, planned for a radical prostatectomy. The patient had a history of essential hypertension, hyperli...
