Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi were detected in 45, 35, and 116 of 411 free-range rhesus monkeys, respectively, in a popular public park in the People's Republic of China. Most genotypes and subtypes detected were anthroponotic, indicating these animals might be reservoirs for human cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and microsporidiosis.

Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum are parasitic protozoans and infections are common in domestic ruminants. Infections can lead to moderate to severe diarrhea with occasion mortalities. Clinical disease with Cryptosporidium parvum occurs in calves between 1 and 3 weeks of age lasting 1-2 weeks in duration. Giardiasis is observed in calves older than 3 weeks of age and is chronic. Th...

The risk of adverse human health impact from waterborne microbial pathogenic agents is potentially highly significant for Californians, especially relative to the risks from residual, unregulated chemical contaminants in domestic water supplies. T lymphocyte-mediated pathogenesis is common to a variety of enteropathies, including giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, bacterial enteritis, celiac's disease, food anaphylaxis, and Crohn's disease. In giardiasis as well as in these other disorders, a diffuse loss of microvillous brush border, combined or not with villus atrophy, is responsible for disaccharidase insufficiencies and malabsorption o...
