Cell growth inhibitions on human cancer cell cultures were determined for the indole sulphur-containing phytoalexins cyclobrassinin, brassilexin (previously isolated from vegetables of the Cruciferae family) and their synthetic analogues 5-methoxybrassilexin and homocyclobrassinin. The most biologically active of these products is brassilexin (LD50 = 8 micrograms/ml).
OBJECTIVE Greater intake of Cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli) may prevent cancer at several sites. Urinary excretion of isothiocyanate conjugates (dithiocarbamates, DTC) provides a specific biomarker of Cruciferous vegetable consumption suitable for epidemiological investigations. However, no gold-standard referent is available for evaluating urinary DTC levels as an estimator of Crucifero...
Evidence that the putative compatible solute 5-dimethylsulfoniopentanoate is an extraction artifact.
A novel gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for analyzing sulfonium compounds as their S-demethylated silyl derivatives has clarified the origin of 5-dimethylsulfoniopentanoate. This compound, previously reported from flowers of Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC. (Cruciferae), is generated from glucoerucin during treatment with hot 6 N HCl. Glucoerucin is the characteristic glucosinolate of...
Studies were done comparing the insecticides SpinTor (spinosad), BotaniGard (Beauveria bassiana), Neemix (azadirachtin), and Surround (kaolin, a clay) with conventional chemical insecticides Capture (bifenthrin) and Helix XTra (thiamethoxam), all applied at seven rates in a 7-d assay to assess their impact on adult crucifer flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)...
