Transistors constitute the backbone of modern day electronics. Since their advent, researchers have been seeking ways to make smaller and more efficient transistors. Here, we demonstrate a sustained amplification of magnetic vortex core gyration in coupled two and three vortices by controlling their relative core polarities. This amplification is mediated by a cascade of antivortex solitons tra...

We examine the spectrum of small perturbations around global and local (gauge) abelian vortices, using simple numerical matrix techniques. The results are of interest both for cosmic strings and for their condensed matter analogues, superfluid and superconductor vortices. We tabulate the instabilities of higher winding number vortices, and find several bound states. These localised coherent osc...

We point out that nontrivial quantumstatistics of vortices in planar superfluid systems has its origin in the Schrodinger equation rather then the Chern-Simons term. Vortices in superfluid helium films are not anyons because helium films are compressible. Quantum Hall effect layers admit vortices with nontrivial statistical interactions thanks to their incompressibility. We consider type II pla...

We introduce an asymmetry in the core of a high charge optical vortex by using an appropriate computer generated hologram. The splitting of a high charge optical vortex core into unit charge vortices has been found to depend on the extent of the asymmetry. For a second order vortex, the trajectories of the split unit charged vortices and their separation have been recorded as a function of chan...

Vortices in superfluid 3He-B have been observed to undergo a core transition. We discuss the analog phenomenon in relativistic field theories which admit embedded global domain walls, vortices and monopoles with a core phase structure. They are present in scalar field theories with approximate global symmetries which are broken both spontaneously and in parts explicitly. For a particular range ...

We show that spiral vortices in oscillatory systems can lose stability to secondary modes to form dual-mode spiral vortices. The secondary modes grow at the vortex core where the oscillation amplitude vanishes but are nonlinearly damped by the oscillatory mode away from the core. Gradients of the oscillation phase, induced by the hosted secondary mode, can lead to additional hosting events that...

Optical vortices in linear and nonlinear media may exhibit propagation dynamics similar to hydrodynamic vortex phenomena. Analytical and numerical methods are used to describe and investigate the interaction between vortices and the background field. We demonstrate that optical vortices that have quasi-point core functions, such as optical vortex solitons, may orbit one another at rates that ar...

Vortices are fundamental magnetic topological structures characterized by a curling magnetization around a highly stable nanometric core. The control of the polarization of this core and its gyration is key to the utilization of vortices in technological applications. So far polarization control has been achieved in single-material structures using magnetic fields, spin-polarized currents or sp...

Linear defects are generic in continuous media. In quantum systems they appear as topological line defects which are associated with a circulating persistent current. In relativistic quantum vacuum they are known as cosmic strings, in superconductors as quantized flux lines, and in superfluids and low-density atomic Bose-Einstein condensates as quantized vortex lines. We discuss unconventional ...

We generate double-charge white-light optical vortices by sending a circularly polarized partially incoherent light through an uniaxial crystal. We show that the generated polichromatic vortices are structurally stable, and their correlation properties can be altered by the beam focusing, resulting in changes of the vortex core visibility.
