We use super-paramagnetic spherical particles which are arranged in a two-dimensional monolayer at a water/air interface to investigate the crystal to liquid phase transition. According to the KTHNY theory a crystal melts in thermal equilibrium by two continuous phase transitions into the isotropic liquid state with an intermediate phase, commonly known as the hexatic phase. We verify the signi...

We study the formation of domains in a continuous phase transition with a finite-temperature quench. The model treated is the Φ4 theory in two spatial dimensions with global O(2) symmetry. We investigate this using real-time thermal field theory, following Boyanovsky and collaborators, and find that domain sizes appear to be smaller than those produced in an instantaneous quench in the tree-lev...

Homogeneous nucleation of a new phase near a second, continuous, transition, is considered. The continuous transition is in the metastable region associated with the first-order phase transition, one of whose coexisting phases is nucleating. Mean-field calculations show that as the continuous transition is approached, the size of the nucleus varies as the response function of the order paramete...

In the last few years power laws and universal scaling have been extensively used to study the field dependence of the magnitudes involved in the magnetocaloric effect of materials. They are key tools which allow us to compare the performing properties of different materials regardless of their nature, processing or experimental conditions during measurements. It was proved that power laws and ...

Processing of ScanSAR data for interferometric applications requires careful attention to the phase and position accuracy to obtain interferometric products with high correlation and continuous phase across the bursts. We describe an interferometric processing system developed for ScanSAR data acquired by the ALOS PALSAR instrument able to produce differential interferometric products with 350 ...

Nucleation of a new bulk phase is almost always heterogeneous: It occurs at a surface. Nucleation of a new surface phase also occurs at a surface of course. We study nucleation in an Ising model with both bulk and surface (prewetting) transitions. We find no clear distinction between nucleation of the bulk and surface phases. As the bulk transition is crossed, the phase that is nucleating chang...

Spinodal decomposition of deeply quenched mixtures is studied experimentally, with particular emphasis on the domain growth rate during the late stage of coarsening. We provide some experimental evidence that at high Péclet number, the process is isotropic and the domain growth is linear in time, even at finite quenching rates. In fact, the quenching rate appears to influence the magnitude of t...

We numerically study the directed version of the fixed energy sandpile. On a closed square lattice, the dynamical evolution of a fixed density of sand grains is studied. The activity of the system shows a continuous phase transition around a critical density. While the deterministic version has the set of nontrivial exponents, the stochastic model is characterized by mean field like exponents.

in this paper, we studied effect of different parameters including density, viscosity, interfacial tension and solute transfer concentration on phase inversion hold-up. the results showed that change in phase density ratio had no effect on phase inversion hold-up. it also disclosed that the phase viscosity ratio was the most effective parameter affecting phase inversion hold-up and each phase h...

We investigate a suggested path to self-organized criticality. Originally, this path was devised to "generate criticality" in systems displaying an absorbing-state phase transition, but nothing in its definition forbids the mechanism to be used in any other continuous phase transition. We used the Ising model as well as the Manna model to demonstrate how the finite-size scaling exponents depend...
