The evolution of naturalistic, embodied agents and behaviours has been a long-standing goal of Artificial Life since the initial, impressive work of Karl Sims. Incremental evolution has been used extensively to improve the quality of evolutionary search in many complex, non-linear problem spaces. This work sets out to disambiguate the lexicon around incremental evolution, advocating the term en...

This paper deals with the arrow of complexification of engineering. We claim that the complexification of engineering consists in (a) that shift throughout which engineering becomes a science; thus it ceases to be a (mere) praxis or profession; (b) becoming a science, engineering can be considered as one of the sciences of complexity. In reality, the complexification of engineering is the proce...

In competitive coevolution, the goal is to establish an “arms race” that will lead to increasingly sophisticated strategies. However, in practice, the process often leads to idiosyncrasies rather than continual improvement. Applying the NEAT method for evolving neural networks to a competitive simulated robot duel domain, we will demonstrate that (1) as evolution progresses the networks become ...

The evolution of complexity has been a central theme for Biology [2] and Artificial Life research [1]. It is generally agreed that complexity has increased in our universe, giving way to life, multi-cellularity, societies, and systems of higher complexities. However, the mechanisms behind the complexification and its relation to evolution are not well understood. Moreover complexification can b...

We show that the univalent local actions of the complexification of a compact connected Lie group K on a weakly pseudoconvex space where K is acting holomorphically have a universal orbit convex weakly pseudoconvex complexification. We also show that if K is a torus, then every holomorphic action of K on a weakly pseudoconvex space extends to a univalent local action of KC.

In this paper, we describe an example of a hyperkähler quotient of a Banach manifold by a Banach Lie group. Although the initial manifold is not diffeomorphic to a Hilbert manifold (not even to a manifold modelled on a reflexive Banach space), the quotient space obtained is a Hilbert manifold, which can be furthermore identified either with the cotangent space of a connected component Gr res, (...

Penrose's twistor theory and many other ideas of mathematical physics are based on the notion of complexification. This notion is explained and examples of its apphcation in physics and mathematics are described. In particular, the well-known analogy between Yang-Mills fields and harmonic maps of Riemann surfaces becomes rather stronger after complexification. This strengthening is the main poi...
