Bacterial adaptation to new environments often leads to the establishment of new genotypes with significantly altered phenotypes. In the Wrinkly Spreader (WS), ecological success in static liquid microcosms was through the rapid colonisation of the air-liquid interface by the production of a cellulose-based biofilm. Rapid surface spreading was also seen on agar plates, but in this two-dimension...

The important human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is known to spread on soft agar plates. Here, we show that colony spreading of S. aureus involves the agr quorum-sensing system. This finding can be related to the agr-dependent expression of biosurfactants, such as phenol-soluble modulins, suggesting a connection between spreading motility and virulence.

Problems associated with overgrowth by spreading molds are not addressed by currently recommended fungal enumeration media. Twenty-two fungi, including 12 mold and 3 yeast genera, were evaluated for the effects of dichloran (2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline), previously identified as a mold-spreading inhibitor, on colony diameter and enumeration. On malt agar or antibiotic-potato-dextrose agar (APDA...

Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen that is renowned both for its rapid transmission within hospitals and the community, and for the formation of antibiotic resistant biofilms on medical implants. Recently, it was shown that S. aureus is able to spread over wet surfaces. This motility phenomenon is promoted by the surfactant properties of secreted phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs)...

Objectives Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive pathogen, well known for its resistance and versatile lifestyle. Under unfavourable conditions, it adapts biofilm mode of growth. For staphylococcal biofilm formation, production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) is a pre-requisite, which is regulated by ica operon-encoded enzymes. This study was designed to know the impact of ascorb...

at room temperature (70? to 80?F.) it grows in the form of spreading colonies similar to the ' swarming' Proteus colonies. When incubated at 37?C., the growth is limited to the area of the inoculum. At room temperature the growth continues to spread for three days. If a plate that has been incubated at room temperature and shows a spreading form of growth is subsequently incubated at 37?C., the...
