Although the fungus Candida albicans is a commensal colonizer of humans, the organism is also an important opportunistic pathogen. Most infections caused by C. albicans arise from organisms that were previously colonizing the host as commensals, and therefore successful establishment of colonization is a prerequisite for pathogenicity. To elucidate fungal activities that promote colonization, a...
The role of Bordetella bronchiseptica sialic acid-binding hemagglutinin (SBHA) in bacterial colonization was studied by testing the ability of a phase-I strain carrying SBHA and its spontaneous mutants deficient in SBHA to colonize mouse tracheae. The mutants exhibited a remarkable reduction in colonizing ability, approximately 1,000-fold, when compared with that of the parent strain, suggestin...
Quantitative determination of IncP-1 plasmid loss from Escherichia coli cells colonizing the gastrointestinal tracts of germfree rats was achieved by flow cytometry. Results show that the plasmid's ability to conjugate counteracts plasmid loss and is thus an important mechanism for the stable maintenance of IncP-1 plasmids within the gastrointestinal environment.
We have investigated the lung colonizing ability of four newly established human metastatic melanoma xenografts, designated CRML1, CRML2, CRML3, and CRML4 following i.v. tail vein inoculation into 3- to 4-week-old gnotobiotic CD-1 athymic mice. The experimental metastatic potential of the tumors was assessed from the primary tumor samples through eight progressively growing s.c. passages. CRML1...
the biological control ability of fluorescent pseudomonas spp. results from competition for space and untrient, antibiosis and colonization in the rhizosphere. biocontrol fluorescent pseudomonads produce a wide variety of antibiotics. in this study, the biocontrol ability of 39 strains of biocontrol pseudomonas fluorescens, was examined against fusarium graminearum the causal agent of wheat fus...
Numerous investigations suggest that cell surface glycoconjugates, and in particular sialic acids, are directly involved in determining the metastatic phenotype. To further evaluate this hypothesis, we have used a variety of techniques to probe the cell surfaces of several metastatic variants of the murine B16 melanoma that were selected for experimental lung-colonizing ability (Fidler, I. (197...
