The pathogenesis of villous damage in coeliac disease is unknown. Change to the delicate neuromuscular core may be significant and this study stained various categories of coeliac disease and controls with neuron-specific enolase (NSE) to examine neurofilaments in the mucosa. The amount of NSE staining was evaluated using computer image analysis. The first part of the study compared coeliac dis...

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is a cutaneous manifestation of coeliac disease. Increased bone fracture risk is known to associate with coeliac disease, but this has been only scantly studied in DH. In this study, self-reported fractures and fracture-associated factors in DH were investigated and compared to coeliac disease. Altogether, 222 DH patients and 129 coeliac disease-suffering controls ...

1. Pteroylmonoglutamic acid (PteGlu) absorption has been measured by using the technique of small-intestinal perfusion with tritiated PteGlu in normal subjects and in patients with coeliac disease. 2. At similar intrajejunal pH, patients with untreated coeliac disease have significantly less PTEGlu than normal subjects and patients with treated coeliac disease. 3. The "resting" pH in the jejunu...

BACKGROUND Coeliac sprue is a chronic disease, in which there is a characteristic mucosal lesion of the small intestine and impaired nutrient absorption, which improves upon the withdrawal of wheat gliadins and related grain proteins from the diet. Biopsy specimens demonstrate diffuse enteritis with pronounced atrophy or total loss of villi. There is also a long term risk of malignant disease. ...
