Particles fullfill several distinct central roles in the Japanese language. They can mark arguments as well as adjuncts, can be functional or have semantic funtions. There is, however, no straightforward matching from particles to functions, as, e.g., ga can mark the subject, the object or an adjunct of a sentence. Particles can cooccur. Verbal arguments that could be identified by particles ca...

Subjects model diierent perspectives on a problem domain by collections of related class hierarchies. Subjects can be seen as the result of separate and possibly independent development processes for partial models. The subjects can be eeciently composed by a technique that builds on the notion of roles. The composition allows already combined subjects to be further combined or to be dissolved ...

A view in object-oriented databases (OODB) corresponds to virtual schema graph with possibly restructured generalization and decomposition hierarchies. We propose a methodology, called MultiView, for supporting multiple such view schemata. MultiView represents a simple yet powerful approach achieved by breaking view speciication into independent tasks: class derivation, global schema integratio...

We study many-class few-shot (MCFS) problem in both supervised learning and meta-learning settings. Compared to the well-studied many-shot few-class problems, MCFS commonly occurs practical applications but has been rarely studied previous literature. It brings new challenges of distinguishing between many classes given only a few training samples per class. In this paper, we leverage class hie...

We give machine characterizations of the complexity classes of the W-hierarchy. Moreover, for every class of this hierarchy, we present a parameterized halting problem complete for this class.

We present a novel scheme for object-based video sequence representation using appearance spaces. Our scheme enables fully automatic extraction of semantic video objects for a class of sequences, and their supervised organization in an object-class hierarchy. The hierarchy can be used for generic classification of query video objects, and transcoding using semantics of video objects.

This paper presents an approach to incorporating rule-based methods and encapsulation of such methods into DOOD languages. The main novel feature of this approach is the simple and intuitive logic-based semantics that cleanly accounts for all important object-oriented features such as object identity, complex objects, typing, methods, encapsulation, class hierarchy, multiple structural and beha...

This paper presents concept lattices as a natural representation of class hierarchies in object-oriented databases and frame based knowledge representations. We show how to extend concept lattices by uncertainty in the form of conditional probabilities. We illustrate that uncertain reasoning within the hierarchical structure of concept lattices can be performed eeciently and makes uncertain con...

Downward translation of equality refers to cases where a collapse of some pair of complexity classes would induce a collapse of some other pair of complexity classes that (a priori) one expects are smaller. Recently, the first downward translation of equality was obtained that applied to the polynomial hierarchy—in particular, to bounded access to its levels [HHH97]. In this paper, we provide a...

Our results extending Kuhn’s fault class hierarchy provide a justification for the focus of fault-based testing strategies on detecting particular faults and ignoring others. We develop a novel analytical technique which allows us to elegantly prove that the hierarchy applies to arbitrary expressions, not just those in disjunctive normal form. We also use the technique to extend the hierarchy t...
