BACKGROUND Chylothorax in children is a relatively rare cause of pleural effusion. However, it is usually a common complication of cardiothoracic operations like open-heart surgery. Other etiologies for chylothorax, such as trauma or malignancy, occur more common in adults and rare in children. To explore the etiologies of chylothorax in children, this study analyzed the pediatric patients that...
Chylothorax results from various causes, such as malignancy, trauma, or infection. POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes) is a multisystemic syndrome that is associated with plasma cell disorder. Pleural effusion is a common manifestation of POEMS syndrome, but the association of POEMS syndrome with chylothorax has not been reporte...
Chylothorax as a complication of the surgical treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome is a quite rare event. We report a case of right-sided chylothorax and present a brief review on the treatment of postoperative chylothorax.
BACKGROUND Chylothorax is a rare but serious postoperative condition with a high rate of morbidity and may lead to the mortality of children undergoing congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery. This study evaluated the specific surgical procedures associated with the higher risk of postoperative chylothorax. METHODS We assessed 435 cases undergoing CHD surgery between April 2003 and May 2006. W...
chylothorax in adult occurs most commonly in the wake of cardiac and thoracic procedures. injuries to the common thoracic duct in the thorax or its branches in the mediastinum, injuries to the thymus tissues, dissection of the superior vena cava or ascending aorta, dissection of the aortic arch, disruption of the accessory lymphatics in the left or right thorax, and increased pressure in the s...
In children, chylothorax occurs mainly after cardiac and thoracic surgeries. One of the recommended postsurgery treatments is ligation of the thoracic tract, when all other conservative treatments have failed. We report 4 cases of chylothorax in patients who were successfully treated with this approach, which resulted in a decrease in pleural drainage without recurrent chylothorax.
Chylothorax is an uncommon condition, usually associated with advanced malignant disease or trauma to the thoracic duct. Idiopathic chylothorax and other diverse causes have been anecdotally reported. We describe a rare case of chylothorax, developing as a result of damage to the thoracic duct by a thoracic aortic aneurysm. Tetracycline pleurodesis was successful in controlling the chylous effu...
BACKGROUND Chylothorax is a very rare but major complication in thyroid surgery and should be apparent to clinicians in this field. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case with chylothrax after thyroid surgery in our department that drew our attention. METHODS Systematic review of the literature to evaluate the incidence and the contributing factors of chylothorax after thyroid surgery. Database...
Chylothorax is a rare complication of neck dissection, and bilateral chylothorax is even rarer. However, both are potentially serious and sometimes life-threatening, especially those that are associated with left neck dissection for head and neck neoplasms. We report one case of bilateral chylothorax following left supraclavicular dissection for breast cancer. This case was treated successfully...
Gorham syndrome, which is also called diffuse lymphangiomatosis, is characterised by excessive osteolysis due to uncontrolled lymphatic or vascular proliferation involving bones, of unknown etiology. Chylothorax may accompany Gorham syndrome in case of invasion of lymphatic vessels, or thoracic duct due to neighboring affected ribs, scapula or vertebrae. Chylothorax and vertebral invasion is se...
