Oncocytoma and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma may show a certain degree of histological overlap. The problem of differentiating both types is expected to increase because of the more frequent use of needle biopsies to diagnose small renal masses. In this study. The expression and the possible diagnostic utility of S 100 was evaluated in both oncocytoma and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, us...
The metastasis of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma to head and neck region, described herein, has never been reported before to our knowledge. A 56-year-old woman with a history of nephrectomy, that revealed chromophobe renal cell carcinoma six years before, presented left cervical mass. Imaging showed with left cervical lymphadenopathies and thyroid nodule. Surgery with histopathological exami...
BACKGROUND Erythrocytosis, a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, generally occurs in patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma and has never been reported in patients with chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of a young man suffering from a giant (22-cm) mass on his left kidney. Because of a history of polycythemia vera, the patient had been treated for the condi...
OBJECTIVES We report herein the clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical features of a case of sarcomatoid chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. METHODS/RESULTS A 59-year-old woman referred a two-month history of constant right flank pain, and hematuria. A right radical nephrectomy was performed. Gross pathologic examination showed a tumor located in the lower part of the kidney with two d...
Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma is a distinct subtype of renal cell carcinoma that accounts for 5% of all renal tumors. This subtype is further subdivided into two variants, classic and eosinophilic, with the latter variant being less frequent. We report two cases of the eosinophilic variant of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma diagnosed at our institution between January 2008 and December 2012.
We analyzed 50 sporadic renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) for loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at the chromosomal regions 1p, 2p, 6p, 7q, 10p, 11p, 13q, 14q, 17p, 21q, and 22q. Histologically, the tumors were distinguished into clear cell, chromophilic, and chromophobe carcinomas. Whereas LOH at 14q was identified in 42-64% of all three tumor types, only the chromophobe tumors showed high frequencies of...
Renal oncocytomas (RO) and chromophobe renal cell carcinomas (RCC) display morphological and functional alterations of the mitochondria. Previous studies showed that accumulation of mitochondria in ROs is associated with somatic mutations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) resulting in decreased activity of the respiratory chain complex I, whereas in chromophobe RCC only heteroplasmic mtDNA mutations...
Renal oncocytomas account for about 3-7% of all renal tumors. Macroscopically, the cut surface of the tumor is generally mahogany brown or dark red in color. A central scar is occasionally observed. Histologically, tumor cells with finely granular cytoplasm proliferate in an edematous, myxomatous or hyalinized stroma with a nested, tubulocystic, solid or trabecular pattern. Ultrastructurally, t...
The incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in renal allograft in transplant recipients is 0.22-0.25%. De novo clear cell, papillary, and chromophobe RCCs and RCCs with sarcomatoid differentiation originating in renal allograft have been reported. Routine surveillance for graft tumours is not routinely practiced and these tumours are commonly asymptomatic and incidentally discovered. We describ...
The presence of cytoplasmic sialyl glycoproteins is a conspicuous feature in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We compared the immunohistochemical expression of sialyl glycoproteins in chromophobe RCC with that in other types of renal tumors. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues of surgically resected renal tumors (chromophobe RCC, 14 cases [10 cases of classic type and 4 cases of eo...
