The room temperature absorption bandshape for the Q transition region of chlorophyll a is calculated using the vibrational frequency modes and Franck-Condon (FC) factors obtained by line-narrowing spectroscopies of chlorophyll a in a glassy (Rebane and Avarmaa, Chem. Phys. 1982; 68:191-200) and in a native environment (Gillie et al., J. Phys. Chem. 1989; 93:1620-1627) at low temperatures. The c...

The potential of lecithin BLM with chlorophyll a and with and without carotene has been measured. The BLM containing both chlorophyll a and carotene have shown the highest value of the photopotential. Stronger fatigue effect during light puis excitation has been found on BLM with pigments than with isolated chlorophyll a-protein complex extracted from blue green alga.

BACKGROUND Sea turtles are long-distance migrants with considerable behavioural plasticity in terms of migratory patterns, habitat use and foraging sites within and among populations. However, for the most widely migrating turtle, the leatherback turtle Dermochelys coriacea, studies combining data from individuals of different populations are uncommon. Such studies are however critical to bette...

This study uses derivative spectroscopy to assess qualitative and quantitative information regarding seafloor types that can be extracted from hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance signals. Carbonate sediments with variable concentrations of microbial pigments were used as a model system. Reflectance signals measured directly over sediment bottoms were compared with remotely sensed data from...

Marine free-living nematode communities were studied at similar depths (~500 m) at two sides of the Antarctic Peninsula, characterised by different environmental and oceanographic conditions. At the Weddell Sea side, benthic communities are influenced by cold deep-water formation and seasonal sea-ice conditions, whereas the Drake Passage side experiences milder oceanic conditions and strong dyn...

While seabird conservation efforts have largely focused on protection from threats at the colony (e.g. reducing disturbance and predation), attention is increasingly being given to implementing protection measures for foraging areas at sea. For this to be effective, important foraging areas must be identified. Although numerous studies have examined seabird foraging behaviour, information is st...

The scattering and backscattering coefficients of 15 phytoplankton species were determined in the laboratory using the acs and BB9 instruments. The spectral variability of scattering properties was investigated and the homogenous sphere model based on Mie theory was also evaluated. The scattering efficiencies at 510 nm varied from 1.42 to 2.26, and the backscattering efficiencies varied from 0....

microalgae can produce various natural products such as pigments, enzymes, unique fatty acids and vitamins that benefit humans. the objective of the study was evaluation of carotenoids (beta carotene, zeathanthin, lutein, lycopene and astaxanthin) and chlorophyll a in spirulina microalgae. spirulina powder has been produced by jordan’s method in iran. carotenoids were extracted from spirulina p...

this study investigated the effects of sewage discharge on nutrient concentrations and bod5 levels in the coastal waters and sediments ofthe city of mombasa. the results indicated that nutrient concentrations in tudor, mtwapa and makupa creeks were elevated as compared to concentrations in gazi creek (mean ranges of 0.022-0.039mg/l, 0.038-0.163mg/l and 0.034-0.118mg/lphosphates, nitrates and am...
