Transporters are a diverse group of membrane proteins that facilitate the movement of water-soluble solutes through the lipid bilayer of biological membranes. The least complex transporters are the uniporters (Kakuda and MacLeod, 1994). They simply facilitate the diffusion of their substrates across membranes and dissipate substrate gradients that arise as the result of other processes. Uniport...

The proton-sucrose symporter that mediates phloem loading is a key component of assimilate partitioning in many higher plants. Previous biochemical investigations showed that a diethyl pyrocarbonate-sensitive histidine residue is at or near the substrate-binding site of the symporter. Among the proton-sucrose symporters cloned to date, only the histidine residue at position 65 of AtSUC1 from Ar...

The biological membrane bilayer is impermeable to almost all polar or charged molecules. In order for the various solutes to cross this barrier, integral membrane proteins have evolved to provide a hydrophilic environment within the membrane that can bind and translocate these solutes into or out of the cell, often against their electrochemical gradient. These transporters are conventionally cl...

A spectrum generating algebra is constructed and used to find all the physical states of the W 3 string with standard ghost number. These states are shown to have positive norm and their partition function is found to involve the Ising model characters corresponding to the weights 0 and 1/16. The theory is found to be modular invariant if , in addition, one includes states that correspond to th...

We show that the E 11 representation that contains the space-time translation generators also contains the rank two and five totally anti-symmetric representations of A 10. By studying the behaviour of these latter A 10 representations under SL(32), which we argue is contained in the Cartan involution invariant sub-algebra of E 11 , we find that the rank two and five totally anti-symmetric repr...

We report a novel synthesis of Ti5Si3 nanoparticles (NPs) via the magnesio-reduction of TiO2 NPs and SiO2 in eutectic LiCl-KCl molten salts at 700 °C. The Ti5Si3 particle size (∼25 nm) is confined to the nanoscale due to the partial dissolution of Mg and silica in the molten salts and a subsequent heterogeneous reduction on the surface of the TiO2 NPs.

A flow-through optical fibre chemical sensor for the determination of Co(II) at trace level using immobilised 2-(4-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) as the reagent phase is proposed. PAR is physically adsorbed onto XAD-7. This method provided a great sensitivity and simplicity with wide linear response range from 1x10(-2) to 1x10(3)ppm and detection limit of 20ppb. This method also showed a reproduci...

Liddle syndrome is monogenic hypertension caused by mutations in the epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) that interfere with its ubiquitylation by Nedd4-2. In this issue, Ronzaud and colleagues found that deleting Nedd4-2 from kidney tubules in adult mice led to ENaC accumulation, but not at the plasma membrane, as predicted from current models. Instead, abundance of the sodium chloride transporter N...

The recently elucidated crystal structure of a prokaryotic member of the neurotransmitter/sodium symporter (NSS) family (Yamashita et al., 2005) is a major advance toward understanding structure-function relationships in this important class of transporters. To aid in the generalization of these results, we present here a comprehensive sequence alignment of all known prokaryotic and eukaryotic ...
