Structural changes (deletions, insertions, and inversions) between human and chimpanzee genomes have likely had a significant impact on lineage-specific evolution because of their potential for dramatic and irreversible mutation. The low-quality nature of the current chimpanzee genome assembly precludes the reliable identification of many of these differences. To circumvent this, we applied a m...

Human sera from the United States, Thailand, and sub-Saharan Africa and chimpanzee sera were tested for neutralizing antibodies to 3 chimpanzee adenoviruses. Antibodies were more common in humans residing in sub-Saharan Africa than in humans living in the United States or Thailand. This finding suggests cross-species transmission of chimpanzee adenoviruses.

The effects of potassium, sodium, chloride and calcium on the percentage progressive motility of samples of chimpanzee and bull spermatozoa were investigated. Inhibitors and stimulatory of motility were identified. Three parameters of chimpanzee sperm motility, velocity, frequency and amplitude, were measured. There was no consistent change related to ion concentration. The ionic constituents o...

This study offers a new method for examining the bodily, manual, and eye movements of a chimpanzee at the micro-level. A female chimpanzee wore a lightweight head-mounted eye tracker (60 Hz) on her head while engaging in daily interactions with the human experimenter. The eye tracker recorded her eye movements accurately while the chimpanzee freely moved her head, hands, and body. Three video c...

stem cell factor (scf) is a critical protein with key roles in the cell such as hematopoiesis, gametogenesis and melanogenesis. in the present study a comparative analysis on nucleotide sequences of scf was performed in humanoids using bioinformatics tools including ncbi-blast, mega6, and jbrowse. our analysis of nucleotide sequences to find closely evolved organisms with high similarity by ncb...

Positive selection has been identified and extensively studied in many human genes. In contrast, positive selection in the closest human relative, chimpanzee, has been largely unstudied until recently. With the complete sequencing of the human and chimpanzee genomes, a comparison of the types and numbers of genes that underwent positive selection in the two species is possible. The types of gene...

Studies of lentivirus infection in ruminants, nonhuman primates, and humans suggest that virus infection of macrophages plays a central role in the disease process. To investigate whether human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) can infect chimpanzee macrophages, we recovered monocytes from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HIV-1-negative animals and inoculated these and control human mo...

The spectral sensitivity of the common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) was measured with electroretinogram (ERG) flicker photometry. Chromatic adaptation conditions were used to establish the presence of S-, M- and L-cone pigments. Each of 26 chimpanzees showed substantial and approximately equivalent adaptational changes over the middle and long wavelengths implying an absence of any significant ...

Phylogenetic analyses based on the major capsid protein sequence indicate that Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and chimpanzee polyomaviruses (PtvPyV1, PtvPyV2), and similarly Trichodysplasia spinulosa-associated polyomavirus (TSPyV) and the orangutan polyomavirus (OraPyV1) are closely related. The existence of cross-reactivity between these polyomaviruses was therefore investigated. The findin...
