Fast growing E. coli cells, in glucose-aerobic conditions, excrete fermentation by-products such as acetate. This phenomenon is known overflow metabolism and has been observed a diverse range of microorganisms. In this paper, we study chemostat model subject to metabolism: if the substrate uptake rate (or specific growth rate) above threshold (different from zero), then secretion by-product hap...

We show the global stabilization of the chemostat with nonmonotonic growth, adding a new species as a "biological" control, in presence of different removal rates for each species. This result is obtained by an extension of the Competitive Exclusion Principle in the chemostat, for the case of two species with different removal rates and at least one nonmonotonic response.

Continuous culture of Bacillus popilliae was achieved for the first time in a small chemostat. Initially, variable cell yields during steady-state chemostat growth led to a re-examination of growth rates in batch cultures. B. popilliae NRRL B-2309 and a wild strain were both found to be natural mixtures of three substrains characterized by different growth rates and colony morphologies and vary...

In synchronized continuous cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 8066, the production of the extracellular invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) showed a cyclic behavior that coincided with the budding cycle. The invertase activity increased during bud development and ceased at bud maturation and cell scission. The cyclic changes in invertase production resulted in cyclic changes in amounts of invertase l...

The influence of dilution rate on the production of biomass, ethanol, and invertase in an aerobic culture of Succharornyces carlsbergensis was studied in a glucoselimited chemostat culture. A kinetic model was developed to analyze the biphasic growth of yeast on both the glucose remaining and the ethanol produced in the culture. The model assumes a double effect where glucose regulates the flux...

Protein expression is shaped by evolutionary processes that tune microbial fitness. The limited biosynthetic capacity of a cell constrains protein expression and forces the cell to carefully manage its protein economy. In a chemostat, the physiology of the cell feeds back on the growth conditions, hindering intuitive understanding of how changes in protein concentration affect fitness. Here, we...

A discrete, size-structured model of phytoplankton growth in the chemostat. A discrete, size-structured model of phytoplankton growth in the chemostat. Abstract: We introduce inhomogeneous, substrate dependent cell division in a nonlinear matrix model of size-structured population growth in the chemostat, rst introduced by Gage et al. 7] and later analyzed by Smith 11]. We show that mass conser...

We consider the modeling of the dynamics of the chemostat at its very source. The chemostat is classically represented as a system of ordinary differential equations. Our goal is to establish a stochastic model that is valid at the scale immediately preceding the one corresponding to the deterministic model. At a microscopic scale we present a pure jump stochastic model that gives rise, at the ...

The Rosenzweig-MacArthur (1963) criterion is a graphical criterion that has been widely used for elucidating the local stability properties of the Gause (1934) type predator-prey systems. It has not been stated whether a similar criterion holds for models with explicit resource dynamics (Kooi et al. (1998)), like the chemostat model. In this paper we use the implicit function theorem and implic...
