Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive tumour in adulthood, in which cardiac troponin T seems to be a tumour marker and course parameter. We present the clinical course of a young man suffering from this rare disease and the development of troponin T during therapy. Noninvasive cardiac imaging was used to exclude cardiac involvement, myocardial infarction or inflammation processes.
Primary cardiac tumours in the foetuses and neonates are uncommon. Foetuses with cardiac tumour have risk for heart failure and hydrops fetalis. Therefore, an early decision for delivery should be made in the evidence of foetal compromise. Early neonatal care varies on tumour size, type, location and obstructive features. Antenatal detection of foetal cardiac tumours ensures better prenatal and...
OBJECTIVE To ascertain whether patients with cardiac failure and reduced body weight ("cardiac cachexia") have increased circulating concentrations of tumour necrosis factor (cachectin). DESIGN Patients with cardiac failure were prospectively identified as "cachectic" (body fat less than 27% in men and less than 29% in women measured by skinfold thickness callipers) or "non-cachectic". Tumour...
UNLABELLED A papillary fibroelastoma is a rare, avascular, cardiac tumour that is often found incidentally using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Peripheral i.v. injection of a microbubble contrast agent is often used to characterize abnormal masses within the heart allowing further delineation of physical features, the area of attachment, and vascularity of the mass in order to differenti...
Primary cardiac tumours are rare entities and angiosarcoma is the most frequent primary cardiac malignant tumour. Mean survival is six months and the tumour responds poorly to chemotherapy. We present the case of a 50 year-old patient with localised pericardial angiosarcoma who survived 23 months after diagnosis with a combined approach of chemotherapy and surgery.
Propagation of Wilm's tumour to the right atrium was diagnosed by echocardiography. The tumour prolapsed into the right ventricle during each atrial systole. The presence of the tumour and its motion were confirmed by cardiac catheterization, cineangiography, and surgical exploration. Successful resection of the tumour was accomplished. Echocardiography was helpful in detecting the presence of ...
Papillary fibroelastomas (PFEs) are rare cardiac valve tumours with reported incidence of <0.03% according to autopsy studies. Among them, pulmonary valve PFEs are extremely rare. With wider use of echocardiography, they are being increasingly recognized premortem. We describe a case of a 32-year-old Caucasian woman with PFE of pulmonic valve diagnosed by echocardiography. The patient underwent...
Dear Editor, Ladombarda et al’s article attracted our attention. They showed for the first time three-dimensional echocardiographic images of rhabdomyoma complicated with tuberous sclerosis in an infant. In their case, observation by two-dimensional echocardiography, if made cautiously, would have revealed almost all features of the tumours and the cardiac functional morphology. Furthermore, do...
