BACKGROUND In 2011, a multistate outbreak of listeriosis linked to contaminated cantaloupes raised concerns that many pregnant women might have been exposed to Listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis during pregnancy can cause fetal death, premature delivery, and neonatal sepsis and meningitis. Little information is available to guide healthcare providers who care for asymptomatic pregnant women wi...

The application of azadirachtin to foliage of cantaloupes did not significantly reduce successful pollination by commercially managed honey bees, Apis mellifera L., as measured by numbers of foraging honey bees and yield. Similar results were obtained when the synthetic insecticide imidacloprid (used as a standard by cantaloupe growers) was applied to the soil. Fruit yield and quality, as a fun...

Consumption of produce contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 has resulted in cases of foodborne illness. We determined the efficacy of a mixture of three E. coli O157:H7-specific bacteriophages (ECP-100) in reducing the number of viable E. coli O157:H7 on contaminated fresh-cut iceberg lettuce and cantaloupe. E. coli O157:H7 was spot inoculated on lettuce pieces (9 cm2) with a population o...

Spoken words undergo frequent and often predictable variation in pronunciation. One form of variation is medial /t/ deletion, in which words like center and cantaloupe are pronounced without acoustic cues indicative of syllable-initial /t/. Three experiments examined the consequences of this missing phonetic information on lexical activation. In Experiment 1, the Ganong Paradigm (W. F. Ganong, ...

A resistance monitoring program conducted for the polyphagous whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), in Imperial Valley, CA, USA generated a large set of LC50s for adults collected from broccoli, cantaloupe and cotton crops over a four-year period. A vial bioassay and, subsequently, a yellow-sticky card bioassay produced similar temporal profiles of relative susceptibilities to the pyrethroid in...

We identified a novel serotype 1/2a outbreak strain and 2 novel epidemic clones of Listeria monocytogenes while investigating a foodborne outbreak of listeriosis associated with consumption of cantaloupe during 2011 in the United States. Comparative analyses of strains worldwide are essential to identification of novel outbreak strains and epidemic clones.

Kaur, Simran. M.S., Purdue University, December 2013. Chlorine Dioxide Gas Treatment of Cantaloupe: Residue Analysis. Major Professor: Mark Morgan. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a selective oxidant and powerful antimicrobial agent. Previous work has shown that treatment of cantaloupe with ClO2 gas at 5 mg/L for 10 minutes results in a 4.6 and 4.3 log reduction of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogen...
