Bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD) virus is ubiquitous in cattle populations throughout the world. Strategies for controlling BVD virus infections are continually evolving. Current control procedures are based on identification and elimination of persistently infected cattle, which are a primary source of virus for non-infected cattle, and immunisation with killed or modified live virus vaccines. Add...

Bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) has been (tentatively) identified by electron microscopy in purified virus preparations, in infected cell cultures and in tissues and cells from infected animals. These studies have revealed a spherical membrane-bound particle with a diameter of 40-60 nm. The membrane is smooth, bilaminar and surrounds a dense or semi-dense core of 20-25 nm. The core particle...

In view of the recently established genome organisation of pestiviruses, their classification as members of the togavirus family is no longer tenable. They should rather be provisionally considered as a new genus of the Flaviviridae, irrespective of differences in the nonstructural genes. Like other positive-stranded RNA viruses, pestiviruses are highly variable; apart from point mutations, rec...

Our understanding of the molecular biology of bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) has greatly increased over the past several years. The development of monoclonal antibodies (MAB's) has identified a key antigen of BVDV while at the same time providing evidence for considerable variation in this protein. MAB's, particularly those directed against the p80 protein, can be developed for use in diag...

respiratory disorders are major concern for dairy cattle industry. viruses and bacteria in combinationwith stress play a key role in triggering acute respiratory infections. the most important viral agents arebovine viral diarrhoea virus (bvdv), bovine herpes virus type 1 (bhv-1), bovine respiratory syncytial virus(brsv), parainfluenza virus type 3 (piv-3) and bovine adenovirus (bav). this cros...

The measurement of antibody responses of animals exposed to BVDV either through a natural exposure or an immunization protocol is still a standard procedure. For BVDV, the test formats have been largely limited to ELISA which is a valuable diagnostic test to measure the level of BVDV specific antibodies as well as antigen in blood samples. In the present study, 120 blood samples were collected ...

The stability of some viruses and methods of virus inactivation in liquid manure are reviewed. The authors discuss experimental data on the stability of foot and mouth disease virus, classical swine fever virus, Aujeszky's disease virus, African swine fever virus, swine influenza virus, porcine paramyxovirus, bovine virus diarrhoea virus and transmissible gastroenteritis of pigs virus. Recommen...

This review deals with the role of viruses in the aetiology of bovine mastitis. Bovine herpesvirus 1, bovine herpesvirus 4, foot-and-mouth disease virus, and parainfluenza 3 virus have been isolated from milk from cows with clinical mastitis. Intramammary inoculations of bovine herpesvirus 1 or parainfluenza 3 virus-induced clinical mastitis, while an intramammary inoculation of foot-and-mouth ...

The spectrum of viruses inhibited by a genetically engineered consensus interferon (IFN) YM643 (interferon alfacon-1) was evaluated using a cytopathic effect inhibition assay or plaque inhibition assay for five DNA viruses and 12 RNA viruses. This activity was compared to that of natural IFN-alpha derived from Namalwa lymphoblastoid cell line [IFN-alpha (Namalwa)]. The viruses inhibited by both...

The preparation and preliminary testing of a subunit ISCOM (immunostimulating complex) vaccine against bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is described. Vaccination of calves with this vaccine yields high neutralising titres against a panel of Danish BVDV field isolates. The serological difference between virus isolates and vaccine strain selection is discussed.
