Using the natural curvature invariants as building blocks in a superfield construction, we show that the use of a symmetric trace is mandatory if one is to reproduce the square root structure of the non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld Lagrangian in the bosonic sector. We study the supersymmetric extension of the gauged O(3) sigma model in 2+1 dimensions and find the supersymmetry algebra. We also discuss soliton solutions in case the Maxwell term is replaced by the Born-Infeld term. We show that by appropriate choice of the potential, the self-dual equations in the Born-Infeld case coincide with those of the Maxwell’s case.

The low-energy effective action of supersymmetric D-brane systems consists of two terms, one of which is of the Born–Infeld type and one of which is of the Chern–Simons type.
