Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) induces apoptotic cell death in bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells and B-lymphoma cells. Using a BHV-1 glycoprotein H null mutant, we have demonstrated that although penetration of BHV-1 is not required, attachment of BHV-1 viral particles is essential for the induction of apoptosis.

Herpesviruses, previously isolated from cattle (Theodoridis, 1978), were further studied and provisionally placed in the bovid herpesvirus 4 (BHV-4) group. Major differences were found between IBR-IPV (BHV-1) and BHV-4 virus strains. In MDBK cells, all BHV-4 strains started growing at the edges of the culture, the process progressing slowly until destruction of the cells was complete by the 10t...

Serum samples from 51 apparently healthy breeding bulls were screened for bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) antibodies using an avidin-biotin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, revealing a sero-positive prevalence rate of 45.09%. Semen samples were then collected from 12 of the sero-positive and 12 of the sero-negative bulls and tested for BHV-1 antigen using both a virus isolation assay and a polym...

Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5) is the causative agent of a fatal meningo-encephalitis in calves and is closely related to BHV-1 which causes infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. The gene encoding BHV-5 glycoprotein gH was sequenced. A high degree of conservation was found between BHV-1 and BHV-5 deduced gH amino acid sequences (86. 4%), which is also observed for all alphaherpesvirus gH sequen...

Here we present the complete genomic sequence of bovine herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5), an alphaherpesvirus responsible for fatal meningoencephalitis in cattle. The 138390-bp genome encodes 70 putative proteins and resembles the alpha2 subgroup of herpesviruses in genomic organization and gene content. BHV-5 is very similar to BHV-1, the etiological agent of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, as reflect...

Like other members of the alpha subfamily of herpesviruses, bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) establishes latent infections in sensory neurons. BHV-1 induces apoptosis in lymphoid cells in vivo and in epithelial cell lines, but the ability of BHV-1 to induce apoptosis in sensory neurons remains unknown. In this report, the susceptibility of rabbit ganglionic neurons to infection by BHV-1 was ex...

Herpesvirus infections of domestic ruminants are about economic losses due to respiratory and reproductive problems. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is a major pathogen of bovines world-wide and causes different clinical manifestations including infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV) / balanopostitis (IPB) and meningoencephalitis [3]. These conditions are...
