A new antibiotic, named laterosporamine, was isolated from the culture broth of Bacillus laterosporus 340-19. The antibiotic is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro and in vivo. It is a water-soluble basic substance, positive to ninhydrin, SAKAGUCHI'S and DRAGENDORFF'S reagents. A non-peptidic structure with an approximate empirical formula C17H35N7O4 was suggested.

We announce here the draft genome sequence of Brevibacillus laterosporus strain Lak 1210, isolated from mangrove soil. This alkaliphilic strain is an efficient chitin degrader and has the ability to control insects and inhibit phytopathogenic fungi. The assembly consists of 5,082,926 bp, with 4,321 protein-coding sequences and a GC content of 41.15%.

The entomopathogenic properties of Brevibacillus laterosporus UNISS 18 against insects are well documented. Here, we report the whole-genome sequence of this strain, which revealed the presence of several insecticide action-related genes. The deriving genetic information will help to elucidate the mechanisms underlying strain specificity and virulence against diverse target pests.
