Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations – mainly of terrestrial origin – are increasing worldwide in inland waters. Heterotrophic bacteria are the main consumers of DOC and thus determine DOC temporal dynamics and availability for higher trophic levels. Our aim was to study bacterial carbon (C) turnover with respect to DOC quantity and chemical quality using both allochthonous and autocht...
This study investigated the impact of composting substrate types on the bacterial community structure and dynamics during composting processes. To this end, pig manure (PM), chicken manure (CM), a mixture of PM and CM (PM + CM), and a mixture of PM, CM and anaerobic digestion residue (ADR) (PM + CM + ADR) were selected for thermophilic composting. The bacterial community structure and dynamics ...
In the current Iranian poultry industry, antibiotics are the most frequently used additive in feeds to increase the productivity. Regarding the negative effects on human health due to consuming chicken whose feeds contain antibiotics, finding an appropriate alternative is of a great importance. This study aims to find an appropriate and harmless feed additive to increase the quality and quantit...
Cell sorting is an important screening process in microbiology, biotechnology, and clinical research. Existing methods are mainly based on single-cell analysis as in flow cytometric and microfluidic cell sorters. Here we report a label-free bulk method for sorting cells by differentiating their characteristic surface free energies (SFEs). We demonstrated the feasibility of this method by sortin...
The brain is assumed to be a sterile organ in the absence of disease although the impact of immune disruption is uncertain in terms of brain microbial diversity or quantity. To investigate microbial diversity and quantity in the brain, the profile of infectious agents was examined in pathologically normal and abnormal brains from persons with HIV/AIDS [HIV] (n = 12), other disease controls [ODC...
We evaluated the correlation of Burkholderia pseudomallei quantities in blood versus urine, sputum or pus. Correlations between bacterial counts in blood and other samples were not found. It is likely that an initial seeding event to extracellular organs is followed by independent growth of B. pseudomallei, and that bacteria in the urine were not passively filtered from the bloodstream.
background: when provisional restorations are worn for long term period, the adhesion of bacteria becomes a primary factor in the development of periodontal diseases. the aims of this study were to evaluate the surface roughness and bacterial adhesion of four different provisional fixed prosthodontic materials. methods: ten cylindrical specimens were prepared from bis-acrylic composites (previs...
Bacteria have been implicated in recurrent choledocholithiasis associated with endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST). This study was designed to clarify whether bacterial examination of bile provides information useful in predicting the risk of recurrence of choledocholithiasis in patients undergoing EST. Bacteria in bile collected via a duodenoscope before cholangiography were cultured. We compared ...
In order to investigate two different strains of Pseudomonas putida on forage quantity and quality of three sorghum cultivars, an experiment was carried out at Agricultural and Natural Resource Research Center of Tehran Province (Varamin) during 2009-2010. The experiment design consisted of three randomized complete blocks in a factorial arrangement. Seed inoculation with Pseudomonas pu...
