Several serology-based immunoassays are used to diagnose visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a chronic protozoan parasitic disease caused by the Leishmania donovani complex. These tests are primarily designed to diagnose the most severe clinical form of VL, known as kala-azar. However, leishmanial infection is frequently asymptomatic and may manifest only as a positive serologic response or positive l...
Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a skin manifestation that usually develops after treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a major public health problem in India. The diagnosis and management of PKDL is complex. This is the first case report from India in which PKDL occurred after paromomycin treatment for VL in an Indian patient.
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala-azar is an endemic parasitic disease caused predominantly, in its Mediterranean type, by Leishmania infantum. Fever and splenomegaly are the most common clinical manifestations, detected in more than 80% of patients. We present two cases with atypical manifestations, without fever and with spleen nodules in the context of an outbreak of VL in Spain.
Seventeen human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients who were harboring untreated subclinical visceral leishmaniasis (VL) were prospectively followed up. None of the 11 patients who received highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) presented with symptomatic VL during follow-up, whereas 2 out of 6 patients who received therapy other than HAART had an episode of overt kala-azar. These fi...
Leishmania donovani is considered the causative organism of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL). Testing of 4/29 DNA samples from VL and PKDL patients as well as 2/7 field isolates showed an aberrant internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) pattern, which upon sequencing strongly matched Leptomonas seymouri, thus...
BACKGROUND The South-East Asia Region Kala-azar Elimination Programme (KAEP) is expected to enter the consolidation phase in 2017, which focuses on case detection, vector control, and identifying potential sources of infection. Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is thought to play a role in the recurrence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL)/kala-azar outbreaks, and control of PKDL is among t...

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala-azar is known to be associated with a mixed Th1-Th2 response, and effective host defense requires the induction of IFN-gamma and IL-12. We address the role of the differential decline of IL-10 and TGF-beta in response to sodium antimony gluconate (SAG) and amphotericin B (AmB), the therapeutic success of SAG and AmB in Indian VL, and the significance of IL-10...
Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a dermatosis that occurs as a sequel of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Elimination of VL requires detection and treatment of PKDL, necessarily because of its capacity to serve as a reservoir for the causative parasite, Leishmania donovani. Diagnosis of PKDL presents a challenge due to low parasite burden in the lesions. In this article we have reviewe...
Post Kala Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL) is an unusual dermatosis caused by a parasite Leishmania donovani (LD). It occurs between six months and five years of following an attack of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) / Kala Azar (KA). As a recurrence of VL, it keeps appearing on the skin of patient even after 20 years of partial treatment, inadequate treatment and in untreated cases. We here 4 case...
