The mortality rate from snakebites in West Bengal is very high and most of the deaths are caused by the Daboia russelli and Naja naja envenomation. Twenty-three plants from the seventeen families were collected from the traditional healers and explored for the first time for antisnake venom activity. In our previous report, the methanolic root extract of the Indian medicinal plants Pluchea indi...
This paper presents two important species of plants used by the Kanitribes of Agastyar hills of Trivandrum district of Kerala against snake-poison and insect bite.
The safety of many African traditional herbal remedies is doubtful due to lack of standardization. This study therefore attempted to standardize two polyherbal formulations from Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria, with respect to the relative proportions (weight-for-weight) of their botanical constituents. Information supplied by 41 local herbal practitioners was statistically screened for consistenc...
A new species in the genus Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae), Aristolochia vallisicola T.L.Yao, from Peninsular Malaysia is described and illustrated. Among all Peninsular Malaysian Aristolochia, itis the only species with a pinnately veined lamina and a disc-liked perianth limb. A distribution map is provided and its conservation status is assessed as Least Concern.
INTRODUCTION Aristolochia belongs to the family Aristolochiaceae. In the indigenous system of medicine, the plant was used for the treatment of skin diseases, inflammation and purgative. Root extract was reported to have anti bacterial activity. A perennial climber shrub with woody base stocks. Leaves simple, alternate, entire, with undulate margins, acute; flowers greenish white, in auxiliary ...
This study presents breeding and pollination systems of Aristolochia maxima and A. inflata in a seasonal tropical forest of Panama. Aristolochia is the most diverse genus of Aristolochiaceae, with ∼120 species distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics. All the Aristolochia species studied so far are pollinated by saprophagous flies of different families, which are presumably deceived by...
The anti scorpion venom activity of the Indian medicinal plant (Hemidesmus indicus, Pluchea indica and Aristolochia indica) root extracts (aqueous and methanol) was established in experimental animal models. Adult black scorpions (Heterometrous bengalensis) of both sexes were collected and the Scorpion Venom (SV) was collected by electrical stimulation, pooled, lyophilized and stored at 4 °C. S...
Fibrinogen and β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide independently form ordered aggregates but in combination, they form disordered structures which are resistant to fibrinolytic enzymes like plasmin and cause severity in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). A novel enzyme of 31.3 kDa has been isolated from the root of the medicinal plant Aristolochia indica that showed fibrinolytic as well as fibrin-Aβ co-aggr...
Objective: To explore the efficacy of ethanolic leaf extract of Aristolochia indica L. in bacterial and worm infections using experimental models. Methods: Preliminary phytochemical screening was evaluated by following standard procedure. Antibacterial activity was carried out by disc diffusion method and anthelmintic effect of the plant extract was determined based on time taken for paralysis ...
