BACKGROUND AND AIM Senile prostatic enlargement due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common problem among older men, and is responsible for considerable disability. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and determinants of the clinically diagnosed prostatic enlargement among elderly men in Arar, Northern Saudi Arabia. METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out...
Transcription factors modulate expression primarily through specific recognition of cognate sequences resident in the promoter region of target genes. AraR (Bacillus subtilis) is a repressor of genes involved in L-arabinose metabolism. It binds to eight different operators present in five different promoters with distinct affinities through a DNA binding domain at the N-terminus. The structures...

In Aspergillus nidulans, the xylanolytic regulator XlnR and the arabinanolytic regulator AraR co-regulate pentose catabolism. In nature, the pentose sugars D-xylose and L-arabinose are both main building blocks of the polysaccharide arabinoxylan. In pectin and arabinogalactan, these two monosaccharides are found in combination with D-galactose. GalR, the regulator that responds to the presence ...
Pd-catalyzed aerobic oxidative coupling of arenes provides efficient access to biaryl compounds. The biaryl product forms via C-H activation of two arenes to afford a Pd(II)ArAr' intermediate, which then undergoes C-C reductive elimination. The key Pd(II)ArAr' intermediate could form via a "monometallic" pathway involving sequential C-H activation at a single Pd(II) center, or via a "bimetallic...

Aspergilli are commonly found in soil and on decaying plant material. D-xylose and L-arabinose are highly abundant components of plant biomass. They are released from polysaccharides by fungi using a set of extracellular enzymes and subsequently converted intracellularly through the pentose catabolic pathway (PCP).In this study, the L-arabinose responsive transcriptional activator (AraR) is ide...
Background During the recent decade, several studies about prevalence of symptom-based GERD have revealed increase of its prevalence. In addition to the highly disturbing typical symptoms, it has a series of known consequences and may affect the quality of life. Objective To determine the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as well as their main characteristics and risk facto...
This study describes two novel regulators, GalX and GalR, that control d-galactose utilization in Aspergillus nidulans. This system is unique for A. nidulans since no GalR homologs were found in other ascomycetes. GalR shares significant sequence identity with the arabinanolytic and xylanolytic regulators AraR and XlnR, but GalX is more distantly related.
