The mutagenicity of anthracene, anthraquinone, and four structurally similar compounds of each was evaluated in the Ames/Salmonella microsome assay. Anthraquinone was shown to be mutagenic for strains TA1537, TA1538, and TA98 in the absence of rat liver homogenate. The four anthraquinone derivatives tested were mutagenic for TA1537 exclusively. None of the anthracenes exhibited mutagenic activity.

a spectrophotometric method is used to determine the acidity constants of some derivatives of 9,10-anthraquinone in binary methanol-water mixtures at 25 °c. there is a linear inverse relationship between pka of all acids and the mole fraction of methanol in the mixed solvent. the influence of substituents in the molecular structure on the ionization constants is discussed.

An unstable anthraquinone was isolated from hairy root cultures of Sesamum indicum after preventing light throughout all experimental procedures. The structure of the (Z)-isomer of a previously isolated anthraquinone was determined to be 2-[(Z)-4-methylpenta-1,3-dien-1-yl]anthraquinone by spectroscopic methods. This compound was readily isomerized to the known (E)-isomer under light.

Two anthraquinone derivatives, named anthrasesamones D and E, were isolated from the roots of Sesamum indicum. Their respective structures were determined to be 1,2,4-trihydroxy-3-(4-methylpent-3-enyl)anthraquinone and 1,2-dihydroxy-3-(4-methylpent-3-enyl)anthraquinone on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.

It has been suggested that the rol genes of Agrobacterium rhizogenes could play an essential role in the activation of secondary metabolite production in plant transformed cultures. This study investigated whether the content of anthraquinone phytoalexins was changed in callus cultures of Rubia cordifolia transgenic for the 35S-rolB and 35S-rolC genes in comparison with a non-transformed callus...

five new 1-hydroxy-2-(1-alkyloxymethyl)-9,10-anthraquinones (9a-e) have been prepared. selective nitration of 2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone, reduction to the corresponding amine, diazotization and treatment by sulfuric acid solution afforded the 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone in good yield as the key intermediate. reaction with dimethylsulphate/k2co3 and subsequent monobromination with nbs...

[reaction: see text] The synthesis of a molecular wire bearing an anthraquinone core and thioacetyl end groups for gold electrode binding is described. A model anthraquinone system, substituted with tert-butylthio groups, can be reversibly switched electrochemically from cross conjugated (low conductance "off") to linear conjugated (high conductance "on") via two-electron reduction/oxidation re...

The pod of Cassia fistula Linn. has been used as a laxative drug in Thai traditional medicine for a long time. The pods and leaves contain anthraquinone aglycones and anthraquinone glycosides which are the active laxative form, while rhein is a major component. The degree of laxative potency is depended on the content of anthraquinone glycosides. This study determined the content of total anthr...

Musty "off-flavor" in pond-cultured channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) costs the catfish production industry in the United States at least 30 million US dollars annually. The cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata (Skuja) is credited with being the major cause of musty off-flavor in farm-raised catfish in Mississippi. The herbicides diuron and copper sulfate, currently used by catfish produce...

In August 1995 the development of a new bird repellent, Flight Control containing anthraquinone, was initiated. A series of laboratory formulation testing, cage and pen studies were conducted. The anthraquinone discrimination threshold (concentration at which birds could detect the test material) for starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) was 151 ppm in treated feeds. The model revealed that to achieve 9...
