The sense of smell of 106 alkaline battery workmen exposed at their work to cadmium and nickel dust has been compared with a control group of 84 men matched for age. The battery workers reported significantly more anosmia than the controls (15% to zero) and did less well in the phenol smelling test (27 3% to 4 8 %). Cadmium proteinuria was found in 17 of the battery workers, 11 of whom showed v...
A case of acute permanent anosmia is described in a renovation worker during exposure to a waterproof coating chemical. The chemical consisted of several substances of which four (acetone, acrylates, butyl acetate and carbon disulfide) has been previously reported to induce hyposmia or anosmia in workers. Other aetiologies were clinically excluded but a large arachnoidea cyst in the frontal par...
INTRODUCTION Anosmia, the loss of the sense of smell, is a rare adverse event associated with interferon alpha (INF-α). Millions of patients with hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are currently treated with INF-alfa-2a daily. Only 5 cases of anosmia have been reported in the literature, and none was associated with pegylated INF-alfa. CASE SUMMARY A 55-year-old Arab male (heig...
We present a case of congenital anosmia in a 23-year-old man. He was unable to sense smell since birth. He showed scale-out results on T&T olfactogram. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected absence of the olfactory bulbs, tracts, and hypoplasia of the olfactory sulci. MRI findings were useful for diagnosing and confirming congenital anosmia.
Short stature with loss of secondary sex characters can occur due to genetic disorders. One of them is Kallmann's syndrome. The condition has been noted to be present in families. It is associated with anosmia and hypogonadism. We are presenting a case of young boy who was short statured and had anosmia with multiple hormonal deficiencies.
OBJECTIVE To determine the inherited factors associated with the ability to smell asparagus metabolites in urine. DESIGN Genome wide association study. SETTING Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study cohorts. PARTICIPANTS 6909 men and women of European-American descent with available genetic data from genome wide association studies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Parti...
The first tier of the test battery is an olfactory screening test consisting of a 12-odor identification test. This test discriminates anosmia from hyposmia and normosmia. As a second tier, the Threshold–Discrimination–Identification Test offers a more extensive analysis of olfactory deficits (TDI score, Sniffin’ Sticks). A growing pool of normative data (Kobal et al., 2000) is now available an...
Although anaesthetic drugs are included among the aetiological factors of anosmia, limited reports exist of anosmia induced by general anaesthesia. We present the case of a 60-year-old female patient with a 3-month history of altered smell and taste immediately after recovery from general anaesthesia for a urological operation. The anaesthetic drugs used were fentanyl, propofol and sevoflurane....
There are no reports for anosmia after caudal epidural steroid injections (CESIs). General anesthesia is among the reasons, but the reports up to date are extremely limited. There are no identifiable factors contributing to anosmia after epidural injection, so it is worth discussing. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman with no previous history of any sensory deficits. She experienced ano...
