OBJECTIVES We examined the relationship among biventricular hemodynamics, pulmonary regurgitant fraction (PRF), right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) aneurysm or akinesia, and baseline and surgical characteristics in adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF). BACKGROUND The precise relationship of pulmonary regurgitation with biventricular hemodynamics has been hampered by limitations of...

Current Opinion in Neurology 2009, 22:387–393 Purpose of review Akinesia, rigidity and low-frequency rest tremor are the three cardinal motor signs of Parkinson’s disease and some Parkinson’s disease animal models. However, cumulative evidence supports the view that akinesia/rigidity vs. tremor reflect different pathophysiological phenomena in the basal ganglia. Here, we review the recent physi...

A patient with pure akinesia is described. This rare gait disorder, poorly responsive to therapy, is characterized by gait impairment which may be associated with handwriting and speech difficulties, in the absence of further signs of extrapyramidal involvement. Here, we report the improvement in a patient suffering from pure akinesia after low doses of rotigotine, a non-ergolinic dopamine agon...

Bupivacaine 0.5% when used as a local anaesthetic for ocular cataract surgery does not give absolute ocular akinesia but provides adequate and prolonged pain relief. In comparison lignocaine provides good ocular akinesia at operation but pain relief is short lived. The mixture of the two local anaesthetics in equal volumes eliminated the disadvantages of their individual use.

Three patients showed dramatic psychic akinesia after recovery from toxic encephalopathy. They had no or only mild motor disorders. The spontaneous psychic akinesia was reversible when the patient was stimulated, as if there was a loss of self psychic activation. Intellectual capacities were normal. Two patients had stereotyped behaviours resembling compulsions. In all patients CT cans showed b...
